I had a discussion with my friend about checking the oil level.
I always check it when it is cold.
He says you should check it when it is hot.
What is the correct way to check the oil level?
Hot or cold?

Either is acceptable, but the dipstick is designed for cold. There's not that much variance in the oil level due to temperature, especially on multi-viscosity oils. Just make sure the motor is not running to check the oil. This applies to engine oil only.

The transmission oil is the opposite. It's designed to be measured hot, with the engine running.

Its pretty hard to check it when its hot because of all the residual oil in the dipstick tube. You have to wait a while to get a proper reading, and by that time, its cold.

Engine = cold
Trans = hot

Transmission fluid will vary by vehicle. The Bonneville is checked hot but drive some vehicles with both 'Full Hot' and 'Full Cold' on the dipstick. For different vehicles, always check the Owner's Manual. The transmission fluid in my Cadillac STS cannot be checked. Regardless of what you're checking, the vehicle needs to be on a flat, level surface.

Checking it cold will net the most accurate reading. Say overnight. Especially if you're doing oil consumption tests. You obviously want the most accurate reading possible.

But you can check it when hot too. Usually wait a few minutes/15 minutes or so to let the bulk of the oil drain back to the pan. If you pull out the dipstick, wipe off, re-insert, and pull out to check again, you will get a fairly accurate reading. This is why there is an "operating range" to accomodate for oil still caught in the upper cylindrical area(s), normal levels of oil consumption (all internal combustion engines on planet earth consume oil), thermal expansion, etc...

GM standard verbage is;
Quote:
allow adequate drain-down time

Usually within 15 minutes, 99% of a regular multi-viscosity oil such as 5W-30 suggested for 3800's (and most GM), will have drained back into the pan.

Actually the 6L50/80/90's can be checked but it's not a pretty process.

The G8 and others using this transmission are in the same boat as us. I know I read on G8 forums about people wanting to install a dipstick. There is a fluid filler tube plug on the transmission that I'm sure could be adapted to work.

Yeah, I meant easily ;) Looking through the shop manual it requires getting under the car and checking it from underneath. You're right, not a pretty process.

It probably goes without saying, but make sure you're on level ground.
