Sighhhhh

It's kind of funny actually, because it's just so ridiculous. So I re-did my headliner. While waiting for the glue to cure, I used some bottles I had lying around for the dips. I was quite sure they were sealed and unused. Well, one of them was unsealed but the bottle seam split. The other was so full I assumed it was unopened, but apparently I took the seal off at some point and forgot. And of all things, it was gear oil, one of the most nauseating smells in the automotive kingdom. Now there's 2 spots of gear oil in the fiberglass substrate. I already tried peeling some layers back but it goes deep.

Getting a new headliner sounds like a lot of trouble, and I never look up while I'm driving. I'm thinking about buying some more cheap fabric, a few more cans of glue, and pinning the areas that have oil. I know the cement doesn't stand a chance of adhering to that, but I though if I pin around the area, when it inevitably drops I would hope it would prevent the surrounding areas from being pulled down. worth trying?

A stunt like that is reserved for me. You've intruded on my territory, LOL! Okay, time to be helpful. How about getting a piece of Mylar and gluing it onto the affected portion of headliner. I have absolutely no idea how Mylar will react to the glue/adhesive, but since Echo 1 was made from it, hopefully it would work. - BC

I thought headliners were made of cardboard. Shows you what I know. If it is truly fiberglass, what about laying a single layer of glass cloth large enough to cover the oiled area & then some? The resin will stick to the oil-free glass and should seal the oiled area and give you a solid area to glue your cloth to. The smell of fresh polyester resin is much more enjoyable than nasty gear lube.

Gear lube smell, BTW, may only be rivaled by supercharger oil.

It's a fiberglass backing.

The headliner for the Camaro that I just got done with was a fiberboard without any resin binder.

You could also cut out the effected areas and use fiberglass to fill it back in as well.

Well, I peeled back a couple layers of the board, lay some cloth down, then slathered resin over all the areas. Seems to be working well. Only been 2 days since I got the headliner back in, been so busy I had to drive around without a headliner for weeks before I could spend any more time on my car. Time will tell. Thanks for the suggestions guys. At least I know my next headliner will be better than this one... what a goof-up!! On a side note, it is amazing what 20 years and heat will do to plastic. 2 out of 3 grab handles are for display only now. I was so so careful but some things just disintegrated in my hands.

Did you cop a nice resin buzz while you were laying the fiberglass down?

UV light is another nemesis of plastic. Around here it can turn your dash board into chalk in just a few years. And people wonder why I use my windshield shade in the winter...
