Not the UIM "GASKET". You need to replace the actual (entire) UIM itself.

Make sure you get this included, or buy yourself and hand off to him:

1. New aluminum framed design for the LIM gaskets.
2. APN Upper Intake Manifold

(and 3. Prefer OEM or Fel-Pro VC gaskets).

If you can get him to do all that for that price range, I'd say that's a pretty square deal. I would also STRONGLY consider flushing all the DEX out of the car as well:

I doubt he was talking about the entire UIM, but I'll make sure. Why would you not replace the UIM gasket only?
Thanks,
Bill

Entire UIM should be replaced because the original plastic UIM will have melted / warped over time in the region where the EGR stovepipe comes through it. When that melts/warps all the way, coolant will be ingested from the UIM coolant passages that go to the TB.

The APN kit UIM is plastic, too; but it includes a smaller diameter EGR stovepipe and sleeves the EGR passages with steel tube, and these measures should increase its longevity.

APN UIM kit includes goodies like the UIM gasket (which is some $30 or $40 alone), TB gasket (some $5 to $10 alone) and IIRC new injector o-rings (which are also some $5 to $10), so all told it will add only some $60 or $70 to the bill and will relieve all your coolant ingestion concerns for a long time to come.

What you have is an opportunity to get it right for a LONG time to come. Or run the risk of impending failure at the worst possible time. This should be one-time NORMAL preventive maintenance on any L36 that is still on the OEM upper intake manifold. Failure to do so will cause coolant to be ingested and mix with the oil, which is an almost certain gaurantee of engine (bearing) major failure.

Ended up using the Dorman UIM kit. APN had no inventory. MAP Sensor was cracked and had to replace it too. They refilled it with DEX. I guess I need to get it flushed out good and refill it with other kind of collant huh? What do you recommend?

They also changed my oil and I noticed this morning after letting it sit all night that the oil level is about one inch over the FULL mark on the dipstick. Is this a big problem, or can I drive it like this? I have a long trip starting this afternoon, and do not have time to get the excess oil out.

I picked the car up just as they were closing yesterday, and didn't have time to talk things over with them much.

Thanks,
BIll

By the way. My total spent for everything was $922.52 including tax, for Dorman UIM KIT, new MAP Sensor, Aluminum LIM gasket, new valve cover gaskets, all labor, oil change and refill with coolant (even though it was DEX!).

I guess I got an AVERAGE deal huh?
thanks,
Bill

Yeah, definitely get the dex flushed at some point. Good to see you got it all done. Yes, you will need to do another oil change in the next couple hundred miles, to get the remaining coolant out of the oil.

But what about the oil being overfilled?

Like 00beast said get that DEX flushed out ASAP, you just replaced all those new parts cause the DEX ruins it and you don't want to mess up the new parts.

Replace the coolant with All Makes All Models...you can get it ay any auto part store.

Is it all oil or is it oil with a little coolant in it? Does it smell sweet, or look milky? If so, there's some remaining coolant in there. Do an oil change when you get home from your trip, and that will get rid of any remains of coolant that was in the oil.

I assume the car had sat off a while when you checked the oil level? If not try again after it sits. If it is really an inch over full, you may want to pull the plug and let a little out. just catch it with a funnel in a clean milk jug. if too much comes out pour some back in. It will likely not hurt the engine to have it to full, but I would not leave it that way for long or go on long trips with it that way. It will reduce fuel economy, I believe it increases oil pressure, and is hard on some of the seals in the motor.

It's all oil. No water in it, and the coolant never got into the oil before the work was done. I've put about 25 miles on it since yesterday when I picked it up, and just looked at the oil very carefully. The coolant level in the overflow is still the same. It is all oil, and yes, it was about an inch over the full mark after sitting all night last night.

From what I am hearing you guys say, it's ok to drive as is. I need to get rid of the DEX asap, and drain soime oil before any long trips if I can. Right?

Correct. Getting the Dex out now isn't detrimental, as it's clean dex, but needs to be done sooner rather than later. Definitely drain a little bit of oil. I bet they added 6 quarts of oil instead of 5.

What tools exactly do you need for this job? Im guessing at least a torke wrench. right?
I need to get this job done, & Im thinking that for the money I would pay a mecanich. Might as well get some good tools & do it mysels.

Torque wrench, ratchets, assorted wrenches, etc. You'll need an inch pound and a ft-lb torque wrench.

This Techinfo article - Change UIM/LIM gaskets - will show you what is involved.

I went to gm today, & got a quote of $25 for each vc gasket & $82 for the lim ones. But they didn't want to give me part #s. Can someone give them to me? so that I know I have the correct ones.
