Everywhere I read stated that the key fobs needed to be programmed by the dealer or a locksmith.

Stumbled upon info that Dorman makes a replacement key fob, which comes with a device that you use to program it and your original remote to work in your car.
I messaged Dorman and it was verified that this would definitely work for my vehicle (an 02 SSEI).
All remotes need to be programmed in one session--including your original remote.

I bought the Dorman kit from RockAuto(Dorman# 13745) , already had 1 original and bought 2 other aftermarket replacement fobs off an Amazon seller.

Followed the instructions and now I have 4 working fobs to unlock/lock the doors and open the trunk.
I haven't tested to see whether I now have 2 #1s and 2 #2s but that's my assumption.

The Dorman kit is designed to only work 3 times, as per Dorman, since they do not want it being used as a "shop tool".

All in all, the total cost of all 3 replacement fobs including the Dorman kit was less than even one of the $100 per fob programming fees that the local locksmiths charge.

So, if your local locksmiths and dealerships charge unreasonably high rates because they think you have no other choice---know that you actually do have another choice.
Kudos to Dorman for this!

Interesting. It will basically send the same codes to the RCDLR as the Tech2 in order to program the fobs. Kind of cool for sure.

I ordered 2 new fobs on ebay for $20 then $57 to program both at the dealership in less than 20 mins. The Dorman options is like $70 for 1 fob and the programmer. Sadly still cheaper to go to the dealer after you order the fobs online.

Problem is, it depends on the dealer. I've had a couple of dealers that would do it for free while others told me it is always a minimum one hour charge.

It's not that expensive for the Dorman programmer & fob combo from Rockauto (with the forum discount).
My total cost for 3 new fobs including the 1 with the programmer was $75.

Your Kennesaw dealers must be pretty nice.
Where I am, even the locksmiths want $100 to program a fob.

The even better option is what I offer:

Quote:
Does your Bonneville need a remote but you don't want to deal with having it programmed at the dealer? I'm selling pre-programmed remotes. All you have to do is swap the module in the trunk with the one provided and you have instant keyless fobs. The fobs are $20 each and the programmed module is $20. Shipping is $5 on any combination. 2 remotes and module = $65 shipped

So this will work for the 2000 SE models as well?

As long as your car came with keyless from the factory, yes. You can check to see if you have this module in your trunk. Its located behind the rear seat, in the trunk, by the drivers side 6x9 speaker.

Locksmiths in my area aren't any better than the dealerships.
Knowing that the process takes less than 5 minutes makes it all the more shocking.

I like Harofreak's option, but I am already invested in the fob programmer. My trouble is, it seems the remote receiver is not talking to the drivers door module(?) or whatever computer is in charge of unlocking the doors. I have tried 3 wireless receivers: the one I bought with the car and two from a salvage yard. They all have the same part number. Also, the programming procedure goes exactly the same way with all of them, and with no receiver hooked up.
I took a closer look at the wiring connector to the wireless receiver to see if it had power, and noticed something very strange. It is an 8-pin connector with 4 pins used and 4 pins missing. However, it appears that the 4 pins in the receiver are matched up to the 4 blank spots in the connector.

Can anyone take a look at these pictures and tell me if the connector is right? This is a 2002 SE.

(I am trying to post pictures...)

I'm trying here... BTW, the orange wire has 12 volts more than any of the other 3. Thanks in advance.

Andrew, is it possible to get a 1 fob, a 2 fob, and a valet fob with a module? Did the Bonnevilles have a valet fob?

I'm going the pre-programmed route when I get to that point. I'm thinking of taking a long drive out to see the stash and make some purchases face to face. Sounds like a good way to spend a few hours on a day off.
