hi, my car currently has just a tape player and I found a tape/cd player combo for sale and was wondering is there any way around installing it in my car without having to have a dealership program it? would appreciate the help! worst case senario I guess I could throw a aftermarket deck in, but I just really wanted the combo.

Thanks
Tony

Nope, you have to have the dealer (or someone with a Tech II) program the new stereo to your car. No way around it. Still gonna be way easier/cheaper than throwing even a "cheap" aftermarket HU in, tho...

The headunit is programmed to the car that it came in. When you switch them, they will be locked because of the theftlock. Doesn't matter what features it has, it's changed cars, that's whats important.

Out of curiosity, what does a TechII cost? (probably more than I'd ever want to spend....)

A decent used one is $800-1200. IIRC Haro picked his up in the $800 range, but he's Mr. DealFinder, lol.

Depends on the dealership really. One might charge the full hour, another might just charge $20 or so. Best bet would be to call around and see.

It doesn't need to be programmed. It simply needs VIN# synchronization as many other features run through the radio which require the VIN#. It takes about a minute to do.

A Tech2, used, can be listed for the prices mentioned, but the key is quality. I got mine pretty cheap to, but then I had to spend money to replace a VCI module (the main interface in the T2), and probably will need a new cable at some point in time. Also, if you plan on working on anything CAN compliant (2006+), you will also need an additional CANdi module, and for different GM vehicles, different DLC port connectors.

To add to this... (I have parts he is looking at snagging)

I don't think anyone has attempted yet, but does anyone know if the regular tape deck only head unit also have the provisions already there to add the cd player? My basic thought is swap in the cd player and faceplate to his head unit and save the hassle of dealership cost if it is possible. I have two other head units here but not sure if either one is tape deck only. I will check tonight or tomorrow to see.

EDIT...

I actually have three other headunits... all are CD / Cassette so I have no way of looking into this yet.
