Does it have a U clip that is located in the front of the shifter down toward the bottom? Just take a small screwdriver and pry it out carefully, make sure that you have the shifter all the way back in 1st. It makes it easier to see when it all the way back.

To add to what is written above:

1) Gently but firmly pull down the leather boot (shaft cover) that is just below the shifter knob. It can be worked loose and pulled down without harming it if you grab it at the top (just under the shifter knob). You will not remove this boot, but will simply leave it down and out of the way.

2) Put your foot on the brake and shift the shifter all the way rearward -- toward the trunk. (Do not leave car in Neutral, or else you might go for an unwanted ride!)

3) Look on the front (the side facing the radio) of the knob base (where it fits over the shaft) -- you will see a metal clip about a half-inch long tucked in there.

4) Gently pry this clip out with a small flat-head screwdriver. Be careful that the clip does not go flying when it finally comes free. You'll need this when you want to put things back together.

5) Shift back to "Park." Do not lift up on the knob while doing this -- push downward while shifting. (This step is for safety, and can be skipped, depending upon what you plan on doing after you get the knob off.)

6) At this point you will be able to lift the knob straight up, off of the shaft. If it does not come off easily, wiggle it a little while lifting. You will see some grease on the top of the shaft -- try not to disturb this while the knob is off.

To reinstall, do the reverse. You can reinstall the metal locking clip by pressing on it with your thumb until it is all the way back in.

Cheers!

There will be a small rod coming out of the shaft the shifter sits on, that's your lock "button", you can use that to move the shifter.
