I'm trying to figure out how to put a large bed in my red 1997 pontiac bonneville, I'd like to remove the backseat, then feed the bed through the trunk and onto where the backseat was located (I'd build a frame for the bed to remain level)

Even after removing the seat there is still a barrier though (except for small trunk access cutout). Will I have to use a axe/saw to open this up? or is there a less permenant way to do it? Also any advice for putting a bed in a bonneville would be much appreciated.

There is a larger hole there after removing all the non-permanantly attached stuff. You may find you have more room, however, if you remove the passenger and rear seats, and find a way to comfortably level off the floor.

aside from what others mentioned about the size of the access hole, you need to consider that you couldnt use a large bed, maybe a twin sized matress at the most. Then also consider the thickness of the matress and yourself taking up probably all the hieght youd have between the trunk floor and the trunk lid as well as the upper frame under the rear window and around the acces area. You could probably do it and be able to sleep in there as long as your not one of those people who toss & turn alot and just one person. Youd probably be better just sleeping in the backseat in that case. But if you really want to live in your car (if thats the case) then go for it and try it out, I'd be interested to see how this project would turn out.

Not sure why you want to, but that's all part of the structure, and like said, you'd fit a twin bed at most, and have no room above you. You'd be much better off getting a Blazer/Tahoe/Suburban and putting your bed in there...

If you want a good vehicle for sleeping, I recommend getting at least a used minivan and an air mattress. If you need to sleep in your Bonneville, I've never had a problem sleeping by just putting the driver's seat back as far as it goes and putting the backrest all the way down and the steering wheel all the way up. I actually nap quite comfortably that way on my lunch break quite often. I've also done that on some longer trips at a rest area or other quiet location at night. In colder places a blanket or comforter or a sleeping bag is enough to stay warm.

which end are you planning for your head to be? seems like you could put your head on the trunk end with some type of awning arrangement over the trunk area. you'd then have your legs in where the headroom is low.

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

Thanks for all the great advice, I'm goning to begin working on it in the next week or two. I'll be sure to post pictures and maybe a how-to guide.

If you do remove those supports I highly recommend fabricating some custom supports around that area to maintain the strength and structural integrity of the body. You don't want to get into a car accident with a body that has been compromised structurally.

This just sounds very dangerous, and if anyone gets hurt, your insurance likely won't cover unsafe modifications and you'd be liable for hospital bills, etc.

Why precisely are you doing this project? You'd be much better off removing the passenger seat and making some sort of flat surface between the dash and rear bulk-head and using a futon mattress as mentioned before, or something like that to sleep on.

I also want to know: Why are you doing this? What is the purpose? I think you could create a mostly flat sleeping surface inside the car cabin without modifying anything just by putting the front seats forward and then dropping the seat-backs as far back as they can go, and then putting a memory foam mattress topper over that. -That might put too much stress on the seat backs in that position, I'm not sure. I would NOT recommend removing metal bracing between the back seat and trunk.
