I'm gonna add a trans cooler, and I live nowhere near mountains. I'd add one, because the cooler you can keep your transmission (within reason, you want the fluid 150* or so) the longer it will live.

Tru-cool stacked plate is a good one. See Low pressure Drop trans cooler here. These come with a complete kit that makes installation easy.

Click on the link I provided for you above (in blue) for the price from BulkPart. If you can change your oil or your battery, you should be able to install the cooler. If you have it done professionally, you should not have to pay for more than about 30 minutes of time - say $50-$70.

The link bill buttermore gave you, fyi, that is also the same cooler sold in the B&M 70264 kit, and is the cooler I use on the truck's 4L60E, and works with flying colors, even in the deathly florida summer. I just put a B&M 70268 on the 98 SSE, which also has the thermostatic bypass feature just the same, but the cooler is about half the thickness, but still moves a LOT of heat away from the oil. Its excellent for tight installs, and I still have TONS of room, heck, I could mount two if I needed to! The 70264 (1.5" thick one) is in the $60-70 range, but if you want to save a few bucks, you can get the 70268 pretty *dang* cheap from Amazon. I got mine for $45 shipped I believe.

Oh..and installation is a snap. You can rig it up in 20 minutes...HOWEVER, one thing you'll need is the AUX cooler 180 degree cooler line, so that you dont kink a hose making a 3 inch 180 degree turn. You can get these off early 90s Bonneville SSEis (L67), or early 90s Cadillacs with the 4.9 engine ONLY. Make SURE you get a 3/8" one...older 5/16" are obviously too small at first sight which makes it easy.

Another thing to consider is that in the winter your transmission can get too cold, especially with a cooler. My B&M 70268 gets unhooked in the winter since the transmission doesn't get up past 110* otherwise.

I always recommend a transmission cooler.

Under normal driving conditions, it takes about 20 minutes of driving for the transmission fluid to reach engine coolant temperature if you are using a 160F stat like me. Using a stock 195F stat will take a little longer.

Running up mountains builds up heat faster if the torque converter is not locked up.

If you use the thermostatically controlled trani coolers as mentioned above, mine is like that, cold operation should not be a problem. You can cover the cooler with a piece of cardboard if it really gets cold (like in Alberta :P )

Transmission temps need to be above 110F and ideally at about 160F. GM designed it to be 190F.
There is always a compromise between efficiency and fluid life.
The hotter it is, the less friction, the easier it is to push fluid, the more efficient it is.
The hotter it is, the less life you get from the fluid.
For every 10F below 190F, the fluid life doubles.

So cooking the fluid at 190F, unless you change it frequently, will lower the life of your transmission.

I agree 100%, and it's odd that the Series 1 L67's got tranny coolers from the factory, but then they discontinued the practice.

Every car on this forum will benefit in some manner, assuming the right type of cooler is selected.
