hey guys. quickie on whats up with me. my girlfriend got a 95 SSEi, we worked on the car, she drove it, she loves it, i drove it, i love it, great fuel economy, comfy, and balzy. stumbled across a 93 SSEi for $800, couldnt pass it up. the car has had 2 owners. the first got it impounded by our county sheriff's department at 20k miles in 96 and they then used it as an undercover car until 2007 at 130k miles. the fuel pump went out and the county let it sit in the impound yard until a few weeks ago. regular maintenance and all the service records were available on the car and were still in the glove box. 4k oil change intervals, 20k tranny fluid, 50k S/C oil, timing chain at 125k, tires, rotations, the whole nine yards. the car just had too many miles for them to continue investing money into it. so anyhow i now have the car and im going to try to go through it over the next 2-3 weeks. and then im giving the car to my dad! the guy has worked hard his entire life to provide for me as well as my siblings and his car is at the end of its life and he cant afford to fix it let alone replace it. i would normally fix his car but it is almost beyond repair and is completely beyond being worth it, and honestly i think he deserves something nice. the man hasnt even had air conditioning in a car in almost a decade. anyhow i mean this to say it is very important to me that the car be perfect when he gets it.

first up is the fuel pump.
we are dropping the tank this weekend and are going to get the tank up to a friend's shop where he can clean and cook it so we dont have to worry about any crap clogging the new pump. but i want to know if there are any particular brands of fuel pumps to stay away from. im between one of these three and im obviously leaning to the cheaper of them.

second we are doing cosmetic work. a tree limb fell on the car last year so there was some minor damage done. it has a sunroof which will not open because the roof was pushed in right behind the window. i assume we will be able to simply push this back up because the dent is as wide as the sunroof itself. there is also a small dent in the hood and the trim off the front bumper is gone. the car sat outside so long that the paint is completely dead so after removing all the dents we are going to repaint the car. all dents that we can find were limited to the top of the car from the tree limb. not even a door ding on the side of the car to be spoken of. also the roof liner on the interior is completely caved in. we are going to replace that as well.

third is the tune up. i plan to run the specified weight oil synthetic with brand of oil and filter of my choice. ACdelco copper core plugs, new plug wires, fresh tranny fluid and filter, change out the S/C oil, and i also plan to run some seafoam through the intake, fuel, and oil. changing the motor oil will be the last thing we do since the engine actually needs to run to fully mix the seafoam in with the motor oil and break down any sludge that has accumulated. ah yes we need to do the air and fuel filter as well. once the car runs we will decide whether to do an A/C purge, pull, and recharge.

it will also need new front tires which is a crying shame. the car has goodyears all the way around that dont even have the nobbys completely worn off the tread yet. it just sat for so long that they lost air in the front and rotted developing cracks. they still hold air but i wont trust them. the back tires didnt loose a single psi of air and have no cracks that i can see so i might run them for awhile and see what happens.

other than that the car is a champ. we sprayed ether into the intake and cranked the car off of that with no work at all being done to the car since 2007 and it ran until it burned off the ether. every button that we could mash (and there are alot of them) in the car works except for the sunroof which CANT work because of the dent in the roof but we can hear the electric motor trying. but the dang radio doesnt work. this is an absolute must that he have a working radio. he has never EVER had a working radio in a single car that he has had that was not my moms for as long as i can remember.

which brings me to another question. are there any suggestions for aftermarket radio replacements for this car that will still work with the steering wheel controls? and how does one remove the factory radio exactly?

anyhoo if anybody has anything to add to my list of things to replace/overhaul/do please feel free and also please feel free to give me any suggestions or tips to make life easier. im sure i will run into some miscellaneous problems while we work on it but im sure you guys will be here to give me tips when i do.

I'd check out an ACDelco fuel pump. They tend to be good quality, as far as I've seen. Whatever you get, make sure it has a strainer sock, or get one. You won't want to reuse the old one once you see it. And it may not even attach to the pump you get.

Did you check the fuses? As a cop car, they may have had something else hooked up and didn't really complete the reinstallation. Might not even be hooked up in the back of the radio. To get it out, pop off the dark gray dash plate with a trim fork or flat screwdriver. The section on the left of the steering column is connected to the main piece on the right by the thin section above the column, so pry carefully.

acdelco fuel pump. where can i find one of those? advanced autozone and o'reilly's dont carry them. im going to look online i guess and see what i can find.

okay quick edit. what fuel pumps can be used in my car? does it have to be a fuel pump specifically for a ssei between 92 and 94 or can i use one from a wider range of submakes and years?

i really need to get an answer back soon. the restoration/rebuild is starting this weekend and i would like to have the parts ordered in time to have them here this weekend or next at the latest. i NEED to know what fuel pumps i can use. what model years are compatible with a 93 ssei and are the pumps from all bonnevilles compatible or do i have to get a pump specifically for the ssei? i ask because i plan to browse ebay for deals.

and where the heck are the fuses at in these things anyhow? i dont think i ever looked for a fuse in my GF's 95 and i didnt look in the 93 either. :dontknow:

Try Amazon, online dealers like GMPartsdirect.com or monsterpartsonline.com. ACDelco.com says any supercharged (8th VIN digit "1") of the following: Bonneville, Olds 98 or 88, Or Buick Park Avenue Ultra from 91 to 95 use the same pump.

Fuses are in a panel that folds down above the brake pedal (and a little to the left), hidden behind the glove box insert to the far right (I don't think the radio is on one of those), and under the cover in the engine bay on the top of the firewall (I think those are all engine related). So look at the panel near the brake pedal first. There should be a fuse label on the back of the cover.

and thanks a ton for the details on the fuse boxes. in some cars they are impossible to find.
