At sometime my 94 SE had this problem too. On my 2001 SSEi I have just worked on the front brakes, had the rotors turned. The brakes work great, but like with my 94 sometimes stopping quick from low speed gives a clack from the front area. It's not metallic per se but has a semi loud whack... I was very careful with the reinstallation including the pad retainers. One of the retainers seemed out of place on the left front. I put it in to satisfaction though with a little doubt.

What do you mean by "pad retainers"? The hardware that clips into the caliper bracket that the pads slide on?

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. IIRC the GM e manual I have says retainers. No biggie either way. After I installed the retainers I noticed the top one was sticking out to what appeared to be a lot. I worked with it and got it back in but I am not sure if it as right. The sound was not apparent for the first 4 or 5 days and now it happens only sometimes...
