Has anyone here used the intake kit from ZZ Performance?

I was browsing their L36 parts when I clicked on this item and noted they said it was easily modified for use on H-bodies. The page shows a pic of one installed...
http://www.zzperformance.com/products_img/1171_3.jpg

This looks like a nice, clean install and a functional unit as well with its enclosed box. I like the clear top (and one of my Ghosthawk decals would look right at home there) :)

I would prefer a colored flex tube, or perhaps a color silicone hose between the TB and the box, but I'm likin' the look. If I decide to gothis route then I'll have a PCM tray for sale.

I'd avoid it. It was designed for the W-Body and is "Modifyable" for the Bonne, which means it won't work perfectly, and it appears you'll still be sucking hot engine bay air. Plus they want $250 for it and the filter, which is $70 more than the Intense FWI, which was designed for the Bonneville and works in both cars. Plus ZZP is a company I try to avoid anyways, due to *shoot* customer service and the fact they could give a crap about the Bonneville owners. I have one ZZP part on my car, and it was bought third party.

That thing is clearly inferior to the FWI, and has been since the FWI was introduced. ZZP's is a copy of a couple predecessors (Wizair and Thrasher).

I too, avoid ZZP whenever possible, even if it costs me 10 or 20 more elsewhere. I've had crappy experiences with their tech support and customer service, as well as Zoomer himself multiple times.

I've ordered plenty from ZZP over the past 7 years and have never had an issue.

They are the only vendor that put any real R&D into L36 mods. (cam, rockers, etc.)

Their downpipes have been purchased and installed numerous times without issue. Hard to screw that up, and it's not a part you're likely to need tech support for, or even customer service for that matter. It's a simple piece.

Our Forum's problems with Zoomer go WAY back. His behavior on this forum in the past has been far from stellar. His absence the last 3 or 4 years may be an indication of understanding the errors of his ways.

My personal experiences with ZZP relate to three occasions (2 tech support and 1 customer service call), and all 3 were sub-par. The customer is not 'first' as they are with other companies. As long as you get what you order and it works, you won't have issues. If you have to deal with a person there, you might.

I have heard similar stories from people who dealt with custom PCM tuning, installs or other more complex items, so I can see how that would leave a bad taste in someones mouth.

I'm in that arena where I've bought mostly bolt-on parts and have had few issues. I bought my first powerlog and the front tube was too long causing the collector to contact the a/c comp. I complained about the workmanship and they replaced the unit with no questions asked. Thats really the only customer service issue I've ever had. Any emails I've sent have been responded to quickly, but once again I've had no complex dealings with them.

I also have to agree that ZZ is one of the few vendors out there offering L36 products.

Back to the original topic, if someone could clarify for me, since I've never had a FWI. Do you have to go thru all of this wheel pulling, fender liner removal and such just to wash/clean your air filter?

I certainly dont mean to ruffle any feathers, and I can see how the FWI would be the most isolated filter set-up, but I do like the easier access of the underhood filter, and the enclosed box I'm sure would work just as good as the gutted stock airbox...and be much more esthetic to look at (yes, I am slightly more concerned with engine bay "show" as opposed to ultimate straight line performance)

The FWI is the obvious choice of the board majority, and for valid reasons, but I just dont know if I want to go that route or not.

Yeah to access the filter with the FWI you have to pull the wheel and fender liner. Not a terrible job though, 5 lug nuts and 6 plastic push tabs. Plus the K&N filter only needs to be inspected every 25k miles and cleaned every 100k miles (According to K&N if used properly). I usually clean mine once a year though.

Ultimately it's up to you. If you want to show it off, go for it, it's your car. But you can build your own cheaper probably. I've avoided ZZP as well, except for the downpipe and PLog that I got from them. I had no issues with that particular transaction. I prefer to spend money at Intense.

If you rotate your own tires, that's the opportunity to clean the filter. My 1993 install is a bit different though, so I can actually pull mine up into the engine bay easily.

Thats kind of what I was curious about. I've seen pics where there was a plate in the location of the duct hose mating to the fenderwall. I was wondering if that plate was removable and allowed the filter to be pulled from inside.

But I guess if that were the case, then no one would be pulling front wheels to begin with.

LOL I'll be quiet now :-#

This looks like a pretty nifty unit as well...offers an application for the H-body and comes in custom colors...hmmm

I remove part of the splash shield on the bottom and the headlight, loosen the clamp through the headlight hole and then pull it out the bottom. It's 2 bolts and 5 or 6 pins. Takes an extra 5 min when doing an oil change. I clean mine once a year and it's always plenty dirty when cleaned.
