hi, you can get a decent tool for about 80 bucks at walmart - roadi nsg 100 is what I have and it does more than just pull codes.... there are cheaper ones out there but this one is well worth the money

Sadly, no way to read them in the DIC on our cars.

Bummer. My Dodge pickup will show me the codes in the odo display after 3 key cycles.

The light wasn't on this morning, but a co-worker loaned me his scanner so I can check it out.

Picked one up for $60 @ Advanced Auto that does the job.

OBD bluetooth scanners that interface with your phone can be had pretty cheap.

OBD2 compliant cars need a scan tool to display codes while OBD1 cars could display codes by flashing the CEL when jumping the OBD1 port. A cheap code reader can be purchased for 30-50 bucks or a cheap bluetooth scanner from Ebay will get the job done with the programs available for your phone.
