Hey guys, I recently bought a 2000SSEi Super with 160,000 on it.

I think there might be something wrong with the transmission and/or my shift assembly.

The button on my automatic shifter sometimes won't click in and sometimes gets stuck when it is clicked in. On top of that, when I try to go from Park to Reverse, It feels like I'm in Neutral when I'm supposed to be in reverse. I have to go into Drive then back to Reverse to get Reverse to work.

I also think it might be my transmission fluid. I haven't checked it yet. Either way, I want to change my shift assembly so the button at least works all the time when pushed and maybe it will fix the reverse problem.

My question is: How do I remove my shift assembly? Do it I have to take apart the whole central console or can I just take the assembly out without taking the console out? I have seen youtube videos of people changing their shift assemblies on different cars and some have to take out their center console and some dont.

Have any of you done this? Thanks in advance

EDIT: While doing the assembly swap would I be able to change the shifter knob to something from a different car? I don't like the T shape

You can swap knobs with a couple cars that are similar in model era. The grand prix shift knob fits in, and is more of a bulb with a trigger. There should be a little pin on the base of the handle under the shift boot.
