Rockauto remaining parts came in today, managed to get to the point where I'm waiting on ZZP and Intense. 1 week from the time I placed the order, not yet shipped.

I'm missing some bolts! Oh well, stainless socket head cap screws are in the mail now.

But on that topic, I've noticed a complete lack of bolt size listings for the 3800 everywhere. So I think I'm going to start sharing.

Info moved here

In other news I finally received parts from ZZP and Intense as well as the new headers.

Does anybody know if there is a polished aluminum alternator case for the L67?

I thought I have seen some GP's with polished alternators but IDK where you would buy some, my guess is self polished.

What type of paint do you use for the block? just standard, engine enamel...?

Standard paint. 3800's don't seem to get hot enough to cause issues.

Motor is buttoned up and ready to drop in the car. Tomorrow I plan to pull the old engine, convert the trans to an HD differential, and drop it in the car. I still need a wire harness and a few other random parts before it will be ready to run.

Of course, as expected, the header crossover does not fit. So I cut it up and fixed it.

I went over to Matt's to help out today. We got really close to getting the engine out. We discovered that this car has the 4T60, so the trans is going to need to be swapped as well. Most of the time working on it was spent getting the axles off after Matt saw that the trans wouldn't work. All that's left is the motor and trans mounts, and unhooking the exhaust.

Yeah, and now I have a long list of things that have to be redone before it can be put back on the road. :beerchug:

Brake lines are rusty, ball joints and tie rod ends should be replaced, exhaust needs replaced, sway bars and end links, brakes, struts & springs, subframe bushings, brake hoses...

Which is another can of worms, because I'd want to do the F-body brakes, SSEi sway bars and springs, polyurethane subframe bushings, etc....

You guys gotta be tired of seeing me post this but,
you need to start coming down here to get your cars. No rust unless they were brought down here from the rust belt or they were driven on the beach.
As usual, Matt's work is something to be jealous of. Keep up the great work Matt! - BC

Got the engine out today. Ryan...that exhaust downpipe...

Also adding a new fuel tank, straps, sending unit, and lines to the list.

I never got to see it after they had it welded. But yeah it was pretty hacked up.

I'm rebuilding the trans from the SSEi that I broke the input shaft on.

Funny story there...

The pump shaft was mere miles from failure:
Image

The chain had a little over 1.25" of play in it and the gears are pitted, the reluctor wheel on the chain was about to fall apart, and the thrust side of the final drive ring gear (parking pawl assy) bushing surfaces have some nasty marks. So I need to replace the bushings in the 1-2 drum and the reaction drum (or find all three used in not bad condition).

While I have this trans open for surgery, which solenoids on the valve body are common failure points? Keep in mind this trans is in the 300k mile club.

But on to more of the performance questions. I did initially disassemble the trans to put in a hardened 4th shaft in, chain was nice and tight at that point, pump shaft was near perfect. So it would appear that my driving habits and the NIC + pulley, 6k rpm shifts, were putting a fair amount of stress on the parts. Is there a heat treated pump shaft? Dare I say it - where do I find a 7/8" chain set, or do I use a Gemini set?

I think TEP sells a better pump shaft, ZZP also maybe. And i thought zzp has the 7/8 chains.

The 7/8 chains are pricey, but pop up on GPF and other 3800 communities. I'd check that out before buying new, maybe save some dough. If you have the time to wait that is!

Yeah I've seen the 41xx pump shafts. I think it's completely unnecessary at this power level, when the failure is the same spline wear that is fixed by heat treating the 4th shaft. Maybe I can heat treat a stock replacement with my acetylene torch?
