On the burb: 10 bolt limited slip rear diff with 3:73 gears.

Fixing the leak from the cover and just wondering if there is anything I should look for while the cover is off. Right now there is a leak and I am working on replacing the gasket.

Look at the gears, make sure they are meshing well, and that there aren't any chipped teeth or anything, and be sure to add new fluid. Also look for metal shavings in the fluid.

be sure to only use amsoil or m1 to refill. amsoil definitely far exceeds M1, but M1 is still better than most others.

ours has a slow leak too. Once in a while i see a drop. not enough to dig into it though.

like they said, nothing special. just look for anything out of the ordinary.

Check the spider gears on the differential carrier. There should be no chips. Make sure you clean out the bottom of the housing for sediment. You could check the backlash if you had a dial indicator.

Everything looked good and I ended up cutting a new gasket out of the gasket material I had leftover from the 89's work. Did not see any chipped teeth and there was just a little grey matter on the cover and in the bottom of the housing. It looked like the stuff you see in the bottom of a tranny pan. I haven't had any issues with the function of the rear, it was just an annoying drip. I know a drip means a loss of fluid and before long it will be empty and the rear end overheats. Besides, I hate having my rear end drip.

For future, on rear diffs, for some reason, gaskets don't tend to last as long as black RTV-732. Not sure why, but we won't even use gaskets at work on them.
A pattern and backlash reading will give you a Really good indication of what kind of shape your crown and pinion are in. However, until you start hearing a howl, you should be fine, if you hear a howl ever, lemme know!

Your leak is likely coming from the pinion seal, not the cover gasket.
My 3.55 Jeep front diff has the same issue. It drips down the back and appears to be coming from the cover.

My Bro-In-Law has a 98 Chevy 1500, and the rear-end started howling on him... He's guessing that his rear-end is shot... True?

I know for sure it was the cover. The rest of the housing was dry. It was only wet at the bottom of the cover. I could see the previous gasket was over torqued and actually crushed.
