Meet the newest member of my fleet:

2005 Cadillac STS
Northstar, AWD, navigation, sun roof, black on tan.

Got it for $2600

The bad (paging Lane!):
-Clicking noise from the front passenger side when you launch or go WOT, sounds AWD related
-needs struts and mounts soon enough
-heated steering wheel doesn't work
-Heated seat on front drivers side weak
-airmix actuator or stepper motor on DS not working, air blows out cool no matter what setting
-loose shifter
-front bumper cover paint needs re-done
-condensation in the headlamps, though they are not hazed and aimed too high.
-remote start not working
-brake light row of LEDs out on one side

The good:
Super clean, only two rust spots on the entire car and nothing on the underbody, engine is running great, trans shifting smoothly, drives perfect, everything is working.

Also, I'm in love with the Northstar.

I are jealous of the price. I can't even find a decent previous gen FWD Seville STS for that price unless it's some beat up hoopty...

Most likely front CV joint related. Not overly familiar with that issue.

These can be costly

-heated steering wheel doesn't work
You're SOL here. Unless you take it apart and try to fix it yourself or find one in the boneyard (which if it hasn't failed it inevitably will). Not sure about the non-V versions, but for us V owners, GM no longer has replacement steering wheels for 2006 - 2007 owners. I seem to recall non-V owners in the same boat.

-Heated seat on front drivers side weak
I'm sure you could just pull the seat cover and inspect the element for shorts

-airmix actuator or stepper motor on DS not working, air blows out cool no matter what setting
Not familiar with this issue.

-loose shifter
Lots of shifter problems with these cars. Most common is the inability to shift out of park. But a search on Cadillacforums would get you a ton of info.

-front bumper cover paint needs re-done
Standard body work

-condensation in the headlamps, though they are not hazed and aimed too high.
Common issue. I believe you can disassemble just like any other headlight assembly. Otherwise if you want new, these housings are VERY expensive.

-remote start not working
My guess is that there is a Body code (a communications issue on the network or something similar) that is causing this. Clear it and it will work. Mine will sporadically have this hiccup. I go in with the T2 and clear the body codes and it works again. There are a lot of body control electronic gremlins on this car. Sometimes I also lose my express down/up feature and express close on the sunroof until I clear these codes...

-brake light row of LEDs out on one side
Not sure if there is a fix because I haven't seen something like this posted. I've been behind a few with one or two LED's out. It just might be easier to find another.

Sounds like the clicking noise is the transfer case chain jumping. I'd have to dig into that one.

Can you get it though? That is the $64k question. Yours you may be able to get. Yours has wood trim inserts around the rim. It's the same design wheel, but ours doesn't have the wood trim.

So if the chain stretches, then starts skipping, how many dozens of metal shavings are floating around in the transfer case? I'm guessing I'd have to replace the sprockets and the chain, and any bearings at that point.

Then I find on car-part that I can get a used transfer case with half the miles on it for ~$300. The new chain is $200. So, I might just go that route.

I need a tech 2. lol.

I'd just replace the whole thing. You don't know what you're getting into without opening it up. So to answer your first questions... I don't know. The fact that it still seems to work in normal driving, I would say that there probably isn't a lot of damage... Yet.

Seriously... WTF is someone gonna do with a spare tire cover? I haven't looked at mine lately so I'm a little foggy (it's not something one normally goes and checks out), but I seem to remember a trap door setup under the carpeting.

No room. Plus the lid has a form fitted carpet on the underside.
