So unfortunately I toasted my 350 top end. My ignition was 1.85ish (should be 1.8mm or less) when checked after it happened and I ran a bit without realizing the slides were in backwards.. Live and learn. There was a meet coming up about 35 miles away I was dead set on going to. So, I took my old 250 top end, painted it, did a quick polish on the fins and installed with it re-timed to 1.77 BTDC. I screwed up the top end on a Thursday afternoon, had it apart that night, cylinders went back out to Chuck (guy who did the machining) Saturday morning and it was running again, jetted in as a 250, by Saturday night. Chuck is working on the 350 top end and the good news is it wasn't super bad.

The meet got rained out so I took my forks apart for a spring and emulator upgrade. These forks came off of ebay with good stanchions, one sort of polished tube and the other not so much. Since it was all apart, I decided to polish the one and re-do the other. Here's some pics of the process then a comparison of the one leg I got through and what it used to look like. I started at 220, when through 320/400/500/600/800/1000/1500 mostly hand sanding and I used a dremel with directionally wrapped sandpaper to do the tight radii. Then buffed it out. The one leg took about 6 hours.

The second fork took way longer than the first but it's all together and on the road again.

For the fork rebuild I went with 0.8kg Sonic springs with 10mm of preload, 15w oil at 130mm height and Race Tech emulators with silver spring and 3 turns of pre-load. It feels great so far.

Well, that sucks! "The slides were in backwards..." - are you talking about the carb throttle slides? If those are in backwards it would be like having the throttle about 1/2 way open. The engine would start racing pretty good once it started! I don't recall, does your bike have the auto-oiler, or do you have to premix the gas? For a road bike I'm guessing auto-oiler. Do you have some way to control the metering of the oil?

I would have spent about 5 minutes on a fork tube then said screw this. I admire your tenacity to do something like that. They look great.

Yeah the throttle slides were in the wrong carbs and the cutout that's supposed to be pointed away from the engine was pointed toward it. I think it might have been like that the whole time. I didn't think much of it before since they only go in one way... but they will go in the wrong way in the wrong carb. I could get it to idle ok like that too..

Yep, still have the autolube system. It's hooked up to the throttle cable and it's adjustable. I actually had to back it down to get it within spec. It still smokes pretty good too.

Polishing aluminum.. blows. Lol. I have a tons of hours into my Bonneville stuff.

Now that's just weird. Why would they go to the trouble to build a left and a right carb? Maybe to get to the airmix screws and idle speed screws, I reckon. That had to affect your throttle response off the bottom and in the mid-range. WFO wouldn't make much difference, but the slide cutaway does have an impact on the lower end of the metering spectrum. I think that would make it rather rich in that range. Might explain the blackish piston.

And speaking of black, that's what everything turns when buffing aluminum - especially your hands. :)

Throttle response off the line was bad but I just thought it was due to the huge pipes meant for a 350-400 on a 250.

I got smart and started using gloves when polishing aluminum.. Also did it all outside.

This thing made short use of the redone 350 top end again a couple weeks ago.. this time I had a likely culprit.

Image
Image

That rip was out of direct sight.. The one piston started to melt and it'll likely require an overbore this time. It obviously sucks but I slapped my old 250 top end back an an hour or so after finding the damage and it's back up and running.

I'm in no hurry to get this thing running as a 350 again this season. It's fun as a 250 and I know I can rip on it without it crapping out. That said, I hate not having a quantitative form of measurement not telling me what's up. I have a wideband on my daily bike for efs sake. Widebands don't last long in 2 stroke format and they're not accurate at low RPM (2 strokes sometimes 4 stroke). EGTs are widely used but I really don't want to hack up my JL chambers and add mess to the bike. So, Cylinder Head Temperature it is. I picked up 2 Trail Tech CHT sensors for both cylinders to monitor temps and get an idea of what safe is. The sensors replace the spark plug crush washers. Looking around, they're not super popular on bikes but it seems air cooled engine aviation guys are really into these things.

Image

The things are self powered, have the time and even show max temp. A quick test let me know that my one plug was fouled and once that was addressed, I got a steady 10-15* temperature difference between cylinders. I'll be swapping the sensor leads and then comparing compression to figure that one out. Either way, I'm happy to have something other than plug color to give me a heads up on how the bike is running.

When it's running. :poke: :)

So are you thinking it sucked a fly or some dirt in there? I suppose, being downstream from the air filter, it could have leaned that cylinder out a bit; the filters probably restrict the intake of air slightly.

Haha. Hey this thing was back up and running within hours of both melt downs.

I’m thinking the one side leaned out but who knows.

One last hurrah on this thing today before it gets stored for a while. I clocked just under 100 miles up one of my favorite areas in PA, basically everything just west of the Delaware River from Washington's Crossing up to Easton. It's beautiful up there.

The cylinder head temp sensors I added in one of my last posts have come in handy on some highway stints too. They're definitely a nice tool to have.

Beautiful pic. Very green in that part of the country. While I'm sure when the Northeast was named "New England" it wasn't because they thought it looked like England, but that picture does remind me of Wales. (I mention Wales as being part of England at the risk of inciting the wrath of any Welch persons who may run across this post!)

Bike's still looking sweet, but I'll have to admit 100 miles would probably be about all I could take on the old girl. :)

Lol. I'm a McPatrickO'FlanneryMagee so no issue here. I've never been outside of London and my 23 year old memory of Ireland is fading. So I don't have much to really compare it to in totality. Now if there were some industrial revolution relics along the same road, it would be like NZ.

I'm with you on the 100 miles being the cap and I'm 36. It was a lot to do on that bike in 4 hours. I was getting leg cramps on mile 40 or so but was able to stretch it out. I have a feeling that in a few years stretching might not do it anymore.. lol. In all honestly it made me more glad I got out and did it now.

When you're within spitting distance of 60 after 100 miles on that you'd have to come to a rolling stop and have someone lift you off the bike and straighten out your arms & legs. I'm active and consider myself to be in reasonable shape, but age is a spiteful mistress. Ya just can't do things ya usta could and the penalty for trying can be steep.

I'm probably in the express lane on the super highway to that scenario given all my injuries.

I blew the dust off this thing today with a 60+ mile round trip to an annual Norton Meet.

The bike held up surprisingly well in my garage over the past year and a half. I rode it once in Feb '21, once in the fall of last year and a couple short rides recently. I think the only storage prep I did was Stabil in the tank, burned off the bowls and lubed the chain. To prep for this trip I just checked tire pressures, added oil, gas, lubed cables, and wiped it down. Against my previous better judgement I spent about 30 sustained mins on the highway each way.. I have cylinder head temp sensors and decided I didn't want to see over 300*F. That seemed to work out just fine. Tucking in and resting an elbow on the tank was good for -5*. Lol.

Image
Image

The bike got way more attention this year compared to when I brought it to this meet in 2019. I've noticed in that short time, 2-strokes aren't as easy to find in craigslist. I'm sure that plays into it.

This 100+ year old Thomas bike was also at the meet. I absolutely loved to see it leaking oil because that means it runs. I also love old PA plates.

The Yamadog is looking pretty good! Interesting study in drag when you can tuck and drop engine temp 5*. What speed were you going and how much increase in speed when you tucked? You should use one of your old pistons for the kickstand spacer...that would be classic! :)

The old Thomas is pretty sweet. I can see the original designers in the garage saying "we should put a motor on this bicycle", and the Thomas was born.

I think I've actually used an old piston in the past but in a hurry went with the old reliable Bonneville bushing cup I made long ago. For a show the piston definitely would have been better.

For the drag test I was going about 65 but was really locked into my RPM gauge since its less wobbly. I made sure the before and after tuck was the same RPM about 6400 if I remember right.

This bike got stuffed under my work bench after my last post and I didn't ride it until 2 weeks ago. Full tank of old gas and all. That was just to prep to go to the same Norton meet. This year the meet was an additional 60 mins and 40 more miles round trip but no additional highway miles (100 mi, 2 hrs RT). The bike made it there without issue.

(hopefully the potato phone resolution is a temporary processing thing)

The Last 2 RDs were pretty cool. Both were RD350 powered. The orange one had a RD400 tank, 350 oil tank but had the (earlier) DS7/R5 engine and clutch covers like mine. The white one actually gets tracked quite a bit. The Norton was my favorite otherwise.

On the way home I got a little more spicy than usual on the highway and paid for it. The left cylinder that usually runs 10-20 degrees hotter (I have cyl temp sensors) started running 20* less and it was harder to keep the temps low on the right cylinder. I was able to limp it home but it wanted to die at stops. I checked the plugs and they looked ok, no debris, but I swapped those for new and kicked it over. I only got the right cylinder to fire. I checked the compression and it was 20/30 left and 90ish right. It was pretty obvious what the issue was. Overall I got my moneys worth out of this untouched ebay top end.

Originally I was going to try and get a used 250 left jug and piston to slap in and go but that's proving to be harder than I expected. If I'm going to get machine work done, I may as well send my 350 top end back out and upgrade again. But I don't have time to dial in the jetting. We'll see.
