Oh, I'm with you 100% on this bike being the weak link. If I'm lucky I couple fetch about $800 for it I think. $1000 on the high side.

My buddy just picked of two of these (same year even) for $800. One running rough with no title and one not running with title. Both ended up working near 100% with batteries and some carb clean up. So, unfortunately for me, these old enduros are going for fairly cheap here and the surrounding area.

That's pretty interesting on the RTV. Inside my case was all oxidized like you were saying but for whatever reason my point stayed corrosion free. My electrical rubber grommet coming out of the front cover leaves something to be desired.. I'm betting salt water got in there, pooled up and had a party with the heat of the engine.

Gave the DT a workout tonight.. lol

This will be the 5th or 6th time the same buddy and I have towed one anothers bike.. This time both bikes were mine.

Did a 1 for 1 parking swap and now the DT is in his posession with a possible garage spot for it in the not so distant future.

Since you were riding around in the winter slush, that's a definite possibility. Salt water makes a great electrolyte. Throw in a little heat, a wicked electromagnetic field, and you've got a great environment for corrosion. Odd that your points came through unscathed. I used to have to dress up the points on the old Star Chief after it sat for a while too.

+1 on the Magneto's magnetic field attending said party. That didn't cross my mind for whatever reason. Makes complete sense.

You crack me up with those old bikes.

I believe the electromagnetic field generated when the mag is spinning is what creates corrosive properties from RTV. I don't know the physics/chemistry of what's going on but I suspect maybe some constituent of the RTV is getting ionized into something that reacts corrosively with the mag parts. Anyway, I know from observation/experience that silicone RTV should not be used to seal a magneto cover. :)

Did you get the road bike started? I assume that's why you were dragging it...

People we pass really get a kick out of us towing bikes with bikes. I mean, it's hilarious for us too.. especially at the sound of the 175. It sounded like the biggest 175 on the planet. Wubbb. Wuubbbb. Wuuubbbb.. Wuuuubbbb... Wuuuuubbbbbaa... Wuuuuuaahhhhhhhhhhhhh as it slowly got up in engine speed. The little engine that could towing 400lbs.

Nah, not started yet. I dragged it over to my garage now that I have room to work on it.. Hopefully tomorrow. I'll update the DS7 thread with some pics over the weekend.
