So last summer I installed a nice drilled 180 t-stat in the truck. It works fantastic in the summer. Keeps the temperature pegged right where it should be no matter now hot it gets. However I spent all winter with no heat since the truck has a belt driven fan and it NEVER warmed up no matter how long it ran. So I have decided I need a winter thermostat, so does anybody have a good brand they like to stick with? The last one I bought at advance sucked and I would much rather pick one up then have to order it

Get a stock temp (196°, IIRC) one from NAPA.

I agree with Ed, just get the stock temp from Napa. That is what I ran in my 95 burb and had plenty of heat when going through Wyoming in February.

Does it have the clutch on the fan? Make sure the clutch is not bad. It is supposed to be free floating when the temps are cold and as it absorbs the heat from the radiator it is supposed to engage. I did have to replace it on my burb.

If worse comes to worse, put some cardboard in front of the radiator too, which will drop air flow and increase heat retention.

I guarantee your fan clutch is stuck.

What do you have in there now? Is that the one you dont like? If not then go get one like that one. I have used the AZ and Advance ones for the past 10 years and never had problems. I dont go for the "failsafe" at AZ but do like the heavy duty ones at Advance.

The one I have in it now is a drilled 180 I ordered from summit. It works great but leaves me with no heat in the winter, however since I now know that my fan isn't supposed to spin all the time (it has for as long as I have had the truck) I am going to pursue fixing this first I looked at fan clutches a little bit and it seems there are about 20,000 different choices for my truck I now need to determine which one my truck has

Good and funy info here for testing the fan clutch. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-96473.html

I like the guy with the hose.............If you use his method, :poke: make sure someone video tapes it to show us.

Thinking on my way home, have you flushed the heater core both ways? Have you gotten it warm and felt the heater hoses and the upper radiator hose to see if they all feel abut the same temp?

It hasn't been flushed but I know the heat works, it will heat up fine in the summer. It never gets up to temp when the ambient temperature is below 50° or so

I'd say it's 1/16 your thermostat, and 15/16 your Fan/radiator. Do a thorough flush and replace the clutch with the OE replacement from NAPA. You shouldn't need one for HD cooling or anything. Measure your fan just in case it matters.

It doesn't need a flush, the antifreeze is only about a year and a half old, when my thermostat stuck last year it blew the upper hose and dumped most of the coolant, so along with the new thermostat it got mostly new antifreeze

I just have to figure out which clutch fits my truck, looks like there were options of both rotation direction and mounting hole size on my year

Take it off and take it in with you when you go to NAPA then. They'll be able to match you up.
