Well the oil leak/consumption has gotten better with new oil pan gasket but not perfect but I'm gonna call it a day at that. It is MUCH better than it was.

I have a question on the tranny. It is a 4T60 (440-T4).

I have yet to change the tranny fluid so that will be the first thing.
(Also going to add a quart of Lucas trans fix, that seemed to help the tranny on the 97)

But I am wondering:
When just normally driving it it revs up to about 3k rpm at about 25-28 mph.
But if I keep on the gas it will get up to about 2200 rpm at 20 mph. If I let off the gas it will shift (thus shifting at what seems a "more normal" shift point).

What do you think? Something wrong?

There is a cable from the the tb to the transmission that controls the shifts. There is a button under a rubber coating. It will be hard to push.

While holding it in, open the throttle and hold it open. Then release the button.

Does this need to be done with the car running or only key on or what?

Where exactly is the button located?

Nope, this is a mechanical link between the transmission and throttle.

It's the cable that runs to the transmission. You don't need to have the key on or anything to adjust it.

Forgot to update this:

I screwed around with this cable a couple times. I set it too exactly how the service manual told me and it was much worse. Didn't want to shift at all.

Adjusted it again, then it was shifting way to early.

Adjusted it again, and it was just about perfect. Shifts great for a 22 year old car now.

Thanks for the help!

(Now the lil bro is just gonna have to work up the money to pay for gas at 13.1 MPG)

13.1mpg means something is wrong. Have you finished the tune up yet?? Sorry if I over looked it. Have you ran some Techron through it yet?? Have you blown out the carbon yet like someone advised? BTW there's more to that than just running it to 6000rpm and letting off and I'd like to elaborate on that. First, that's a 4x engine not a N* so please, don't push it to 6k. Here's the procedure: hop on the interstate or similar, place the shifter in second gear and run WOT to 5300rpm then let off the gas completely allowing the engine to brake the car down to 35-40mph. Rinse and repeat several times. Obviously you're gonna need to do this at the right time of day (probably night) in order to be as safe as possible. By the looks of that car its probably gonna look like a its a flippin diesel when that carbon let's loose so don't let it scare ya. You really need to check that fuel pressure! I'd bet money the fpr is bad (common failure of 4x's) and its being over run. IF your FP checks out and its still running like butthole during warm up, after you've replaced plugs, wires, cap, and coil, look into bad injectors because those injectors arent known for reliability. Oh, another MUST DO is pulling the TB and cleaning it. Chances are good its plumb full of carbon. Tell lil brother to take it easy on the WOT 1-2 upshifts as well. 4T60 no likey that. ;)
BTW, yes, the 4.1 is crap, but the 4.5 isnt much better, and 4.9 is the best of the three. ALL Cadillac V8's beginning with 4.1 up to the N* are gonna leak and burn oil, the question is how bad. Same goes for head gaskets (heads lifting). With the exception of the very last redesign of the 4x and N*, the question isn't if a head is gonna lift, but when is a head gonna lift.
Sorry for novel here, I'm a rambler. It's meh nature. Looks like a solid $500 car to me. Tune up, Simple Green, sand paper, and some white rattle can paint and she'll be good to go. Did you mention it has working AC? $500 2 door personal luxury car with working AC as a first car is win!

Edit* Skippy, I'm in love with the DTS. ;) So jealous....

She's a Cadillac!

Enough said. Lol

But the EPA rating is Only 15 mpg.
And it gets between 12-14mpg.

Lil bro isn't going to stick any money into it unless absolutely needs it.
He wanted a neon which I would not lw him get so he got this. But he is already planning for somethIng else come summer.

Hopefully something 3800 or possibly VW (dad works there).

Anyways, this Cadillac while a good runner for now is sort of a losing battle.

The paint-obvious. Otherwise the car is very clean with all it undercoating.
And although the tranny shifts good now, I don't really trust it with a V8 and 15xk odd miles.
Amongst other things that it currently needs.

It should last a good while yet and then my lil bro can sell it for what he got in it, have driven a "free" car for 8 months and get something with better mpg.

It has been good to me. I like it.
GM improved the engine in 2003, longer bolts, different threads.. (That's what I read from different sources anyway)

Install a new o2 sensor in this caddy... The 4.5 is not great on fuel but 13 is horrible...

Well, the last tank I checked it got 14.1mpg.

So a tad better. It's only rated for 15mpg.

Ha. I get between 11 and 18 mpg in the city depending how hard I drive it and what seaon it is. Winter is not good for fuel economy.

That EPA gov thing pisses me off... it says my van is 15 city and 23 hwy.... Funny I average 21 in town with a Performance cam... Lost on that...

Then I looked at the 95 Bonneville... They show it as 17 city and 26 hwy iirc... I do 20-22 and 29-32 Hwy... Again lost on their numbers...

The looked at the 03... It showed something like 18 city and 27 Hwy... Its funny that my real world numbers show that both my 95 and 03 are really close, the van is not far behind...

I think they may be taking into account for old cars that are not taken care of...

The original sticker was 16 city and 25 hwy... I still think you could gain a little with a new O2 and a good tune... Did you install new ignition components?

I know the ratings don't seem very accurate. I guess they are made in the government testing facility or whatever.

But my '97 gets well over what it is rated for but then again. I have pretty much replaced any and all parts that would put it in better tune.

The caddy is a decent car, it does it's job, gets you from A to B but other than that we are really not going to spend any money that isn't absolutely necessary. (It's my little brothers car and he has almost no money and barely knows how to check the oil and tires). So that being said any repairs would come out of my pocket and take my time.

Also, he plans on selling the car come summer sometime. (He likes mustangs, but you know how the insurance will be for a 16 year old?!?!? :eek2: )

So I'm hoping to get him into something with a 3800, much easier to work on, cheaper on gas. Just overall a better car IMO.

But on a side note: HOLY TORQUE MONSTER! I took it for a little drive last night, there was just a little snow. Just enough to cover the road. I was going about 5 and then just tromped on it. Digital speedo when to 47 MPH and 3,900 RPM's. Let off the gas and I'm really only going 22MPH. So I punched it again, and was almost burning the tires when I was already moving. It's a fun little car, and the V8 is awesome, but only once in a while. Don't need the V8 and crappy gas mileage all the time.

I'd say the carbon was cleaned out ;)

It actually runs and drives and shifts GREAT once it's warmed up.
