They have the 89. Better gas mileage and I don't need it. It is very rare that we all end up doing things together. Besides, with the ext cab, we will all fit if needed.

The better mileage is pretty much going to come from the lighter weight. The amount of friction in a transfer case/front axle when in 2HI on a 4WD vehicle is less than 1%, especially when cruising.

Should be a good truck Matt, but IMO if you're going to have a nice trailer you don't want your truck to look like you drove it off the construction site that afternoon, lol. Tint and changing to a nicer looking grille surround would improve the looks a lot for not too much $$$.

My suggestions for now are to put synthetic fluid in the trans and rear end, flush the coolant and check everything else out. With 88k the plugs should be good for a while yet, but a MAF/TB cleaning, new air filter and checking all the fluids is gonna be cheap insurance. Does it have an OE or aftermarket hitch?

Also, mirrors. Those are going to suck with any kind of trailer behind you, believe me, I've been pulling trailers with these trucks since I've been driving, and the 06+ towing mirrors blow those mirrors out of the water.

Every time I open this thread there are more pictures than the last time I looked at it. Dang photobucket.

Looks like a stock tow package to me. Is that a trailer break setup I spy in the middle, lower part of the dash?

I know it will get better mileage due to weight, but not having 4wd is a wonderful hassle to not have to deal with.

Looks really clean and nice though. Must of been babied by the previous owners. It looks just like the job site trucks that the foreman gets at my Dad's work, but they are beat to hell though. They use the box of the pickup to lay pipe on them, and hall across the site. Not sure why they would beat on them like that.

We just got back from a trip to the coast and back. I relly like how it handles the hills, definately has a lot more power than the burb.

Matt I am quite sure that thing has a locking rear or an LSD...

as well I agree 100% that you need to go to a synthetic gear oil for the rear end, its amazing how much cooler the rear end will stay with a good gear oil... You will want that if you are going to tow... A gasket may be required for the rear diff cover...

I also agree on some good ATF for that trans to keep it happy.. Also did the HD's come with a Trans cooler?

If that truck has an LSD, stick with a 80w90 dyno juice and a bottle or two of friction modifier. LSD clutches last longer that way. More than likely it does have an LSD, probably a GM14 bolt 10.5" crown gear.
That will pull and pull and pull.

Matt, if it's got a locker it's got the G80 electronic locker. Most of the synthetic fluids now have the LSD stuff in them. The axle should be an AAM 9.5" for the 6.0L 2WD.

EDIT: Matt in the engine pic you can see the drier for the A/C and the lines into the firewall. A/C was pretty much a standard option across all lines.

It could be the 9.5 E locker. 10.5 is a more common option, however, and that diff had an automatic locker, the G80 governor style. (Terrible deisgn).
I can tell you that in 80% of our rebuilds, we run 80w90 and friction modifier (Ford Racing, for its smell). The other 20% would be newer Fords. Most new Fords now require 75W140FLS oil, horrible expensive, but required for the Crown/Pinion set. Most new vehicle manufacturers run a 75W90 synthetic oil with modifier. For me to buy that oil, in the bottle or even in a 20 Litre bucket doesn't make sense. We buy the 205 Litre drum of Synthetic 75W90, and a 205 Litre drum of 80w90. I replace to drums of 80w90 to one drum of 75w90.
3.41/Litre X4 plus $7.00 for friction modifier....makes pretty good sense to most of our customers that put 50,000-100,000 kilometers on a year.
Personally, I wouldn't run a synthetic gear lube in a LSD. Been there, done that, repaired that...not cheap.

To answer some questions, it does have AC, that was a must have.

It does have the G80 LSD rear. It has a trans cooler, oil cooler and power steering fluid cooler with the hydro boost brakes.

I like the black grill and such. Its a truck, thats all, it has a purpose, and it will serve its purpose.

50,000 miles with Amsoil in our 05 Duramax (All lubes) and no issues, and the other board I'm on has people that have run hundreds of thousands of miles on it in these trucks.

At rougly 20 dollars a litre, people are getting hosed and don't even realize it.
Put it this way, a multi million dollar Gear shop that specializes in Gear box/trans/diff repair, won't stock or sell any of that stuff. Just 80/90 and 75/90. Over 55% of our total sales are over the counter retail sales to DIY customers and other shops. The only places that stock the AMSoil/royal purple/...ect are the lube shops...but then again, they make all there money on changing oil, and we make on the money on the after repairs from these places lol

Run whatever you like, there isn't a difference that to me, makes one oil worth more than an other, especially in a rear differential/transfer case. It holds 4 litres and contains 4 tapered bearings. When done right, the average diff will last 300,000-350,000 kms.

I always used Amsoil Severe Gear in the rear ends on the last two trucks I've owned. I remember it being closer to $10 a quart, which is comparable to a standard off the shelf synthetic. They have a 75w-110 which is a good compromise viscosity. Not too thick or thin, but thick enough to withstand some abuse from towing, off-roading and the like. My S/C Frontier had a factory LSD, and with the Amsoil there was no need to add any modifier.

Expensive, sure, but over the life of the vehicle it's cheap insurance and piece of mind. You can usually get some more miles out of synthetic vs conventional, plus there may be a very slight improvement in fuel economy.

Thing I love about the Amsoil website is they have all the specs for what it needs, regardless whether you buy from them or not, all laid out for you online.

Provided you run the right weight and spec fluid you shouldn't have problems. No matter what you use, I highly recommend changing all the fluids.
