Paul,
Cindy said what goes up must come down except if it went all the way to the rafters. Did you hear it hit the floor ? If not you might want to look up.

Part of the mystery is I'm not sure when it happened.
On Saturday night when you asked me to check the fuel filter, I went into the garage and had to put the disassembled carb body into a vise to be able to wrench off the filter housing. The spring must have been sitting inside the carb body cavity.
I was so excited about finding the problem was the fuel filter all along, I wasn't paying proper attention.
I didn't discover it was even missing until Monday afternoon. #-o

Believe me, I've moved everything and searched high and low for the last 3 days. :sadeyz:

The replacement spring(s) have been delivered to UPS and should be on their way here.

One thing this whole excersize is affording me the time to carefully set the carb up to spec.

I discovered that the secondary throttle plates were opening too far (a couple of degrees more than 90 degrees full open), so I had to bend a tab slightly to get perfect alignment per factory specs (a couple of degrees less than 90 degrees full open).

The secondary vacuum flaps were also adjusted a bit loose and needed to be tightened. That alone can cause bogging.

I have the original 1979 GM Maintenance Manuals.

The supposedly "perfectly tuned" carb eh? :P

It sounds like you've nicked a few potential problems, and setup better for the long haul. Definitely better than buying a new setup, and starting all over again.

LOL, yes it was perfectly tuned 30 years ago.
It has perfectly selected primary rods, secondary rods and primary nozzles......and had a perfectly selected power piston spring.
All the pollution control devices had been removed and known weaknesses ie. electric choke, leaking fuel bowl plugs and new brass float.

It may have been messed up by me during its many power piston, needle and seat replacements.
I once had to replace the throttle body with NOS GM assembly and at the time I didn't know how to properly re-adjust it. This last year I have done much research on this wonderful internet we now have. Remember back 32 years ago, the internet did not exist. :P

Yes it will be back to perfect running order soon.

:bwoohoo: The UPS girl came before noon today with the spring!

The 5 springs were different lengths and remembering the feel of the force on the primary rods made for an easy selection.

It's back together and running much smoother. It took a while to set up the high and low idles and adjusting the mixture screws. I had to turn them both out 5 turns (which is exactly where they were originally. Turning them out the recommended 3 1/2 turns was not enough due to the cam so I had to richen it up. No black exhaust.
Took it out for a run and no more limitation.
Yeah!!!!!
The 1st to 2nd shift got tremendous wheelspin and I had to back off or lose it.
I got on it again up to the top of 2nd and it just wanted to keep on going.
Black rain clouds rolled in and I had to garage it again, satisfied knowing this time I know it's not lacking for fuel.....besides the speed limit was only 40 mph in that part of town.

Then I went back to working on my latest Bonne mod.....

What are you gonna do for a fuel filter?

I used a stone filter with no check valve.
With the new short filter housing, it is super easy to remove and clean. I don't have to remove the coolant and upper hose now.

Thanks guys. Just goes to show you most times it's the little things that add up to create big problems.

Rod, the secondary air flaps were set a bit too loose as well. So the secondaries were opening up a little too soon.
When I had the carb off, I was able to see exactly when the spring contacted the adjustment arm. The setting should have been 1/2 turn tight from contact. It was only 1/3. 1/8 makes a huge difference. I have it set now at 5/8 turn.

Next cold start I should have the choke, high idle set just right at 1,200 rpm ramping down to warm idle at 750 neutral/650 in gear.

I don't notice any negative difference without the filter check valve other than it doesn't hold pressure on the gauge and it doesn't drain the carb bowl.
I special ordered the stone filter with the $50 power spring....$25 of which was for shipping alone.

I found the missing spring today.

It was flat from being run over by the Bonne. #-o

But at least I can ID the size from what remains.....

:bwoohoo:

Not only is the problem fixed but it's better than EVER now!!

Just got back from a test run.
Sorry no video but rest assured it laid twin stripes at least 100 feet long and kept going with absolutely no fuel starvation.

Ya, as I eluded to in another post, I bent over and installed a Holley 12-150 gph electric fuel pump in series with the mechanical pump.
The pump is capable of 17 psi but I have it regulated to the same pressure as the mechanical pump at 7.5 psi. I have a gauge on the mechanical pump and on the regulator ahead of the mechanical pump.
The car runs smooth in all conditions with just the mechanical pump running. A flip of the relay switch turns on the electric pump for extended WOT runs.
I can't believe the difference it makes. :bluetwitch: It feels more responsive at all speeds and at WOT....holy sheep crap....the car was loaded with a passenger and a full tank of fuel and this bird flies now!!

All plumbing off the fuel tank is upgraded to AN-8 braided hose (with a filter Rod  )

I don't think I'll need to upgrade the regulator to a bypassing unit and use the stock return line to the tank. The pressure holds at 7.5 psi on both gauges with the engine idling and doesn't creep up any higher.

....and the bonus is, it's quiet! The electric pump that is. I can't barely hear it at idle with the music turned off. I installed the mount with rubber isolation but the Holley model I chose is supposed to be a very quiet unit. The windshield wiper reservoir pump in the Bonne is noisier!

I sure am glad the sun came out today and the roads dried up. I couldn't sleep last night in anticipation of a successful install. Not one leak either!

I only wish I had done this years ago.
Don't ask me what it cost....but I saved about $500 in labour doing it myself.

Time to celebrate with Thanksgiving !!
:beerchug:

The transmission fluid had to be changed so while I was at it I upgraded to a new pan that holds another 3 liters....6.5 in total, and a temperature gauge.

So, after a carb issue that's now sorted out, a filter issue that's sorted, and some miscellaneous upgrades, the Bird is flying faster! Yay!

Although your wallet is likely feeling a bit hung-over from everything...
