I have a friend with a 2002 Silverado K2500 HD with the 6.0L in it and he is having a problem with it stumbling and stalling at times. He came over today and we cleaned the MAF and TB. Since I had Bill's fuel pressure gauge, I thoght I would go ahead and check the fuel pressure.

He had 46psi with key on and engine off. No change when vacuum line was removed from FPR. When started, the FP went to 40psi and slowly dropped to 28psi. It would only come back to 38psi and never get any higher until the motor was turned off.

I told him it sounded like the fuel pump is going out and he is ordering a new one. Does that sound right?

How old is the fuel filter? Definitely replace that first. It's on the frame, just below the driver's door, and requires one of those special tools to release the clips on the one end.

Our 00 Silverado farm truck is having trouble at idle, it bogs way down and revs up. It's the fuel filter, no one has gotten around to getting it in to have it replaced yet, though. Sounds like a similar issue. On ours the FP and FPR were just replaced.

Forgot to mention that. We did change the fuel filter, wrenches on both ends, and di not change anything.

Hm, must be different than what's on our Suburban.

Now that we know that, I concur that it is a weak FP. Your options for replacement are either drop the tank or lift the bed. It's 6 of one and a half-dozen of the other for which way you want to do it. If you have a few strong buddies that will help, I'd definitely take the bed off.

I agree... That does sound like low fuel pressure...

Well, he is on his way over to do the pump swap. Looks like we are dropping the tank. His bed is full of trash he needs to take to the dump.

Not too bad. I personally think dropping the tank was a lot easier than it would be to pull the bed. With living in a salt free state, it makes it a lot easier to drop the straps.
