8 Ball first ran with the double roller and had to remove the balance shaft (or rather disconnect it).

Rogue didn't like the vibrations so changed it back to a single after 6 months or so.

I already planned on replacing the EPC, Brian Mc from Lesabret.com suggested it as well.

As for the balance shaft, i do not know, but great question.

see I never heard anything about this. Wish there was a way to keep the balance shaft operational.

It just seems like the vendors stress using the double timing set when going with a cam or at least the larger ones.

I believe it has to do with not having enough clearance to fit the wider double sprocket gear, so you have to remove the balance shaft couple.
A new best quality single roller with a new tension spring/shoe assembly is a must.

You really won't be able to live with it as a DD without the balance shaft. :angry7:

.....but if all you want is a high revving balls to the wall weekend warrior, then....

So I have been looking in to the doubler roller balance shaft thing. I am getting really split responses. Some say "oh you need the double roller, don't worry the vibration is not that noticeable with the cam", some say you will be just fine with a single.. I wish I knew some one close with a double with no balance shaft so I could see for myself

Do a single roller, and keep the balance shaft. I know SuperSLE did a double roller for a while, and hated the vibration, so he went to a single and the balance shaft. JM2C.

I am leaning toward it but man usually when you ask about any certain part you will get at least a majority saying one thing or the other, it seems half say its not all that bad, don't be a puss, and the other half says you will hate it, go single.

I cant say how bad the vibration would be, but from what I have read it is only at low idle and the bigger the cam, the less noticable it is. But in my area, I spend alot of time at stop lights idling.

Let me make this simple for you.. If its going to be a DD keep the Balance Shaft..

The 3800 will vibrate in a not so nice way from idle to above 1500... Even the old 3.0's that Buick made right down to the 3300 had a terrible vibration... You could watch them vibrate in the mounts.. You have my vote for keep it...

as well keeping the vibration at bay should also help the motor live a longer life..

Don hit it right on the money. Losing the balance shaft and accepting the vibrations will be the beginning of vibration-caused bearing failure over time. Your motor will have a shorter life.

I NEED a double-roller. I've already destroyed a brand-new cam sprocket because of my increased valvespring force. Nobody makes a double-roller, but I'm not sure I'm willing to live with the vibration anyway.

If I crap another cam sprocket, I'll just have the inner section induction-hardened a bit more than OEM spec.

We know of two members who have tried to go balance shaftless and both have gone back to the balance shaft after a short time.

Unless you go for a cam that's so lumpy at idle it doesn't matter and you are going to be rebuilding the engine every season of drag racing, stick with the single chain. Make sure it's new as well as the gears and tensioner.

Keep in mind that it's more a function of the valvespring rating, not the cam itself. All that extra load is the reason people go to the double-roller. In my case, it was the keyway in the sprocket that let loose. Had the sprocket been twice as wide (thicker sprocket), it would have never torn out. I was (and still am) running 105# springs as opposed to the stock 85# springs for a S1 (S2 stock springs are lighter).

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4138&hilit=cam+sprocket

Keep in mind, I have a couple thousand miles on the replacement and it hasn't done it again........yet.
I have the factory prints for the S1 and S2 cam sprockets, and they're hardened in different radius' to different specs. In addition, the S1 cam sprocket is forged and machined, where the S2 sprocket is 'powdered metal' forging, like the S3 rods.

Got the block/heads, almost all the brackets, and pulley assemblies painted. I still am working on cleaning the front cover, LIM, and Oil pan (man the aluminum is a pain to clean). The black is High temp engine semi gloss black, and the rest is high temp "coated cast aluminum". Think it all turned out ok.
Once I get a couple more parts in I can start putting it back together.

Primed and ready to go.

Some reason I don't go into "Your other rides" very often. Glad I did to find this thread! Things are getting very exciting, can't wait to see the paint job.

Good work!
