Deep Water!

Post by Freejack »

I have a 2004 GXP that just unfortunately took a little swim in a low spot of a local street (midwest floods at the moment). I got through the high water, but the car immediately sputtered and died - I managed to coast it into a parking lot and it will not start, after letting it sit for about 30 mins. The air filter is fairly wet, but no standing water in the airbox. Any ideas on getting this thing running, or diagnosing the issue? Possible the MAF just got soaked and needs to dry out? It's still parked at the scene of the crime (tow trucks are giving 4 hour wait times), but I'd rather not let it sit overnight as it's not a good part of town.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you have tools, pull the plugs and crank it. Should clear the cylinders.

Probably a good idea to do an oil change as well once you get her home.

if the air filter is wet, it wont allow air to flow properly - replace it and see if it starts. also, did the pcm get wet?

Got it towed home, had a chance to tear into it just now. I took the front coil pack off and removed the plugs then cranked it - shot water a solid 10 feet out the front bank :/ It will now start, but it runs/sounds awful, like it's going to throw a rod any minute. I probably should have taken the rear off and done the same thing - I'll try that and see if I can get it sounding normal...
but I fear it's toast.

Edit: Well, I can cross "put a rod through an oil pan" off my bucket list :/
