No Brakes?

Post by brownishSLE »

This is the most important repair that needs to be done to make my car driveable. My dad and I were planning on replacing the rotors and pads on the rear brakes (we had a mechanic look at it when my grandpa gave it to me, that was his verdict, and it was something we could do ourselves). However...

We were driving around two days ago (for the first time in maybe 6 months), and we noticed a puddle showed up wherever we parked. I thought it was the A/C. We also noticed the brakes would only engage the last 40ish% of distance you pushed the pedal. When we parked the next time, I realized the puddle was brake fluid. We have stopped driving the Bonneville for right now.

This is beyond what my dad and I want to tackle repair-wise, but I would like to give the mechanic a more detailed idea of what to fix. Any thoughts?

Check the brake master cylinder. I'm guessing your leak is originating somewhere around there.

Also check your brake lines that run under the frame. Fill up the master cylinder and with the car in park, push down on the brake pedal to pinpoint the location of the leak. Try not to pump the system dry
