Type II Delco swap question

Post by SuperHbody »

So I was looking into doing this to my 88' and wondered if I had to switch up to that style ignition wires or keep my existing ones.

I see no reason why you couldn't as long as they're in good shape and reach everywhere correctly.

That's what I thought. I didn't know if the wires were rated differently between the two styles' of ignition coils.

The newer 7mm wires won't fit the 8mm wire guides anyway.

You can use the wires, I just wrapped the excess around the bottom of the coils and across to keep it from hanging.

mine did, but the LN3 has some fancy clip ones that actually close over the wire.

Make sure you have the bracket for the newer type II ICM. The type II ICM won't mount onto the type I ICM bracket. I found out the hard way. If you have all the parts (bracket, ICM, 3 coil packs, and di-electric grease - IIRC the plug wire length from the type I works fine with the type II) you'll be done in about 15 minutes. - BC

Sweet, thanks for the help guys! Got it all set up. Is there a real difference in performance or is it just more reliable?

I can't really tell in performance, but the car does seem to run a bit smoother and significantly more reliable, just my personal observation. - BC
