Road trip mileage report

Just completed a 2464 mile road trip in my NA, 1995 Olds 88. Trip went from Austin TX to Fort Collins Colorado to Albuquerque NM to Austin. 167k on the car. Three people and a loaded trunk. Burned a 103 gallons of gas. Doing the math, that comes out to an average MPG of 23.89. Not bad I figure considering the bulk of this car. AC was on most of time, cruising speed between 75-85mph (with one 45 mile run at triple didgets following a SRT Charger that was kind enough to run point). High recorded mileage was 28.2 on one tank and the low was 23.6. From Raton NM to Fort Collins, your are pretty much climbing the whole way and I didn't back off the cruise control. Outside of Amarillo, we had a really stiff head wind for a full 2 hours. This trip gives a pretty realistic idea what one can expect in real world mileage under standard "road trip" conditions. The last 500 miles I was running solo with an empty trunk and my average mpg per tank did go up some from running loaded (the car, not me :) ). This was the first long road trip with this car since I got it. I was duly impressed with the passing power, a firm stomp to the floor at 80 mph and I could sail past cars very quickly with a terminal passing speed approaching 95. A far cry from my last "lead sled", a V8 Cadillac Broughem. One pass of two cars netted a terminal speed of 112 mph (geez, I need new front struts). Other than the dead fuel pump in Colorado and the blown UIM in New Mexico, everything went well.

60-65 should yield 34 easily.

I know on my recent 4500 mile trip, I yielded about 16.5-17 in the truck, 3 people, absolutely loaded back, couldn't fit another thing in. Pretty nice considering I couldn't have taken that much stuff in a car (H or C body)..so wasn't too bad at all.

I took a trip in the 93, a short trip, only two tanks of gas...alot of it was stuck in traffic in chicago, but I averaged well over 30 on the highway...and even with the nasty stop and go traffic, averaged 28 overall back and forth.

Worst I have done with the 95 SE was 27 And it took some work to get there...

Most of my travels from Here to WV Nets me 29-32 Mpg... Car loaded, AC on... And running with the cruise at about 80mph...

Glad you made the trip.... Looks like it was a bit of a long road but you made it back home :)

Wow.... Thats pretty bad...

Heck even on the 91 LE(2.84).... I did Tripple Didgets for 100 Miles( Long personal Story and was following an emergency Vehicle ) When I finally managed to refuel I had done 31 Mpg... Gotta love tall gears... When I finally returned home, and had a handfull of city driving I refueled and did a 30 Mpg... I think I could have mustered 34Mpg from it..

But for the most part with Cruise set at 70 on a 2.84,2.86,2.93,2.97,3.05 or 3.06... These are all capable of 29-30 Easily... We have heard of the 2.97-2.93's pulling down 33-34 with the cruise set...

I haven't had a good chance to test the Van out yet tho...LOL
