Chunky clunky marble sounds

Hello gent's and lasses
I'm Rick. my wife and I have a 1992 Bonneville with 96,271 miles. We dont do car payments, there are way too many nice used cars out there to go out and buy a new one, I replaced the frond hubs & bearing a few months ago and everything seated very nicely as in the Axle back into the hub. Today after around 35 miles in the 92 Bonneville I heard this chunking sound a sound that reminded me of my 20 + years of well drilling days. Once in a while the Mobile B-57 would pop out of gear and it would seem to bounce on top of the gears until the RPM's were low enough to complete a synchronized resetting Aka put it in gear of the gears. Well this is the same sound we are getting in the Bonneville, It does it around 35 mph and while we are driving straight it seems to quiet a little when turning but that may be to just the fact we were slowing down to round the corner . Tranny fluid look OK nice & pink I did notice a (water?)bubble in the fluid on the stick.
Any Ideas from my fellow Bonneville gear heads? Please let it not be the transmission :helpsmilie:

Does it do it at idle in park? My first though leans toward the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). The rubber between the inner and outer hubs cracks and fails with age and the internal metal stops clank. If you can grab the belt and pull it along the belt path an inch or so back and forth, the rubber has failed.

3 Wikoff very good thought I will check that...............I just Checked & No it doesn't do it in park 3w I had a 50 oz HB let go in the Stang and it shook the car like a 2 dollar crack oar - the W in detox "PG version" :)
It feels like something in the transmission I took off the right front tire jacked up the front Started it up put it in gear and i hear a metal on metal sound like a file as if the brakes were rubbing on just metal on metalwith no pads . However I know it isn't the brakes , I look at the axle is it a two part axle is there a carrier type bearing in this axle anyplace or is it a solid shaft from boot to boot? I ask because just before the middle of the shaft there is a piece of rubber and that piece of rubber shows as if it slid and I see a bit of grease also there is around a ΒΌ play in and out on each side if I grab the axle and wiggle it, yet on the hub side everything is tight & it is seated well into the hub / dust shield it tight movement there at all. If it it s seated in the hub and not moving there ..then where am I getting the movement from when I wiggle it , The wiggle is prob perfectly normal and talking about it is prob doing nothing but taking up precious thinking time from you guys and the real issue at hand ,,but i thought i would mention it noine the less!
Sincerely & Thanks in advance
Rick

You did check the tranny fluid with the car running, warm and sitting level, correct?

Does the sound change when the car is warm or cold?

Does it do it while stopped and in gear?

If you have it in gear, and rev the engine while holding the brakes (go easy on it, you don't want to drive through the back of the garage), does it happen?

Basically... does the car have to be moving to make the sound?

I know from personal experience that when I changed one of my hubs the brake shield was rubbing on the inside of the rotor. It made a horrible scraping noise when driven.
