Two Questions

Post by ncrd1331 »

1. How do i go about getting at a cam sensor (to take it out of the car) in this beast we know and love as the 3800?

2. Same question of an oil sensor? I believe this is my issue for having a pegged oil pressure gauge.

If the Series I (1992) is like the Series II (95-03), the cam sensor is pushed into a hole about one inch in diameter on the front cover of the engine. It is sealed with an o-ring and held in place with a single 6-mm diameter (10mm head) bolt. Look about 6 inches above the centerline of the crankshaft pulley center and about two inches to the left (toward the firewall). Shine a flashlight on a mechanic's mirror lowered to the approximate area. The light will be reflected onto the dark front cover, illuminating it and allowing you to see places you otherwise could not. After you remove the sensor (pickup), use the mirror and the light to look in the hole. You should find an intact interrupter magnet attached to the camshaft gear. No magnet - no cam signal. Should set trouble code 41 if magnet is gone or pickup is bad.

Most oil pressure senders are located on the oil filter adapter plate above the oil filter. Most are easily accessed by removing RF wheel.

When looking into the hole for the cam magnet, you may have to rotate the engine by hand, to turn the cam gear, to get it to appear in the hole. Spin the engine more than twice and don't see anything but holes in the cam gear, you need to replace the magnet.
