How to clean up yellow lenses???

Discuss washing, waxing and detailing information as well as interior/exterior cosmetic modifications. This includes neons, body, cosmetic wheels, etc. Even under the hood detailing.

How to clean up yellow lenses???

Post by RegencyRoyale »

Anyone know anything that will clean up the yellow-ish color film that sometimes builds up on plastic lenses? My corner lamps are pretty nasty looking. The headlights are crystal clear but the corners look frosted and dirty-yellow. Any advice? Read about WD-40 or AJAX doing it but I'm not sure...

???

There are products specifically made for restoring clear plastic lenses and they work great. They all use the same principle - remove the layer of yellow oxidation, and polish the underlying clear plastic. Sometimes a fast-cut rubbing compound is enough to do it, other times, the surface coating must be removed by sanding, and then restored with progressively finer grits of polish.

Meguiar's has a product called Plast-X, now it actually comes in a box I saw at wal-mart called "Meguiar's Headlight restoration kit" has a neat tool to hook to your drill to polish the plast-x in with. That would be a good recommendation for you.

You can DIY that kit for $10 by getting the Plast-X, then getting a cloth polishing wheel at Harbor Freight.

The best way for plastic is to wet-sand the plastic with 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit sandpaper, then hit it with the Plast-X on the cloth wheel.

If you go that route, you will have to re-apply the Plast-X every few months to keep the lenses clear. I've used the above method with great success on several cars now. It's been about a year since I've done my LeSabre, and it just needs the occasional touch-up. The lenses I did for my fiancee look good, too, after a year and less touch-up.
