Spent a good night with Bill and Lisa. My appetite has finally returned but not enough to imbibe with Bill.
I left him with 6 bottles of very expensive wine from Napa for my return in July for WCBF10. We can only bring 4 bottles back with us so we'll bring them back in July. Bill and Lisa can pick one of their choice and we'll drink one in July. They averaged $60/bottle.
Oh Bill, Laura forgot the bag of sandals in Katie's room by the door in a plastic bag. We'll get them in July also.
Now you know we're really gonna make it this year.
Thanks again for making us feel at home. You're a real friend.
We stopped in Burlington Washington at another Hampton Inn. Great place, good location, less expensive than the others in Napa and Sacramento and it has a jacuzzi in the bedroom!
It was a great 5 hour drive. Sunny the whole way up. No cruise control on this run. I was hustling to beat the rain.
We beat it!
Literally!
No sooner than we checked in the clouds moved in and the rain began. If I had gone any slower we would have been in it good.
We burned up I-5 averaging +20 over the limit. Couldn't believe how many patrol cars were out. They were everywhere.
It was the best challenge I've had in a long long time.
Remember in 08 when we got stopped on the same stretch when I inadvertantly passed a bike cop. Well this time I was ready for them. I spotted one in the black diamond lane up ahead and followed well back until he turned off.
At one point I was dogging an Acura until I became bored at only 10 over so I nailed it and did the old two lane double pass around three others, came up behind a new Caddy at 95 just as the van up ahead blew his retread off!
Unfortunately I was following too close and didn't see it until the last split second.
I ran it over.
HARD!
Heard it flap around my right front tire.
Thought it did some damage so just before stopping at the hotel we pulled into a car wash......as usual.... and that bug and tar remover cleaned off the black rubber marks all along one side with ease. Whew!! I was lucky it didn't tear off a mud flap, or worse.
No I did'nt take any pics of it cause I was too distressed and eager to clean it off!!
Leaving tomorrow for the 6 hour home stretch. It's actually only 3 hours of driving and the rest is boat rides.
One highlight I will always remember was entering Sacramento on a ten lane highway with all lanes bumper to bumper and everyone was doing 75 mph.
Now I know why there are multi-car pile ups on these freeways!
Nothing is free.....always a price to pay!
