Electrical steering assist is not steer by wire. A lot of new cars, especially performance ones, are coming with it. On my car if I'm on a heavily crowned road where you're constantly holding the wheel over a few degrees to go straight, it supposedly has a system that will compensate and adjust for your off center... "center". Never noticed it, but short of a go kart, it's got the most steering feel of any car i've had serious time in. While driving my parent's 1998 Yukon for a week last summer, i found myself over doing the steering inputs constantly on the freeway, because I was used to so much feedback.
