I agree totally with this, especially since you have options (I got a hand-me-down). I'm a new driver too, so I know where you're coming from.redfury wrote:Your best bet is to make a list of cars, see what you find the most desirable and then visit the corresponding message boards and start reading about trouble spots, ease of repairs, etc...
- If you're looking the Craigslist (or even a dealer, too, now that I think about it) route, look for signs that someone cared about the car.
- It's good that you're keeping your parents involved - they'll be more willing to help knowledge-wise and money-wise.
- You seem like a sensible person, but just to drive a point home: If no one's mentioned it yet, put good safety ratings high on the importance list.
- If you live on a farm, a truck seems like the most simple and traditional solution, but that doesn't mean you have to get one. I've always thought small SUV's were super cool and actually really capable. Had a bunch of experience this summer towing boats with a 90s GMC Jimmy and it worked great. Not in your age range, but there's others like that to think about.
- Obviously, in the end, choose what is going to make the most sense but also something you can have pride in.
