Looking for specific information for Tech1A 97 SSE

Post by Corvette95 »

So I am a new member here. I am helping a family member out with a 97 SSE that he bought new. Car just turned 40k miles . It has a few issues I am going to take car of. My question is for anyone using a Tech1 / 1A. I am a car guy, have a Tech1 and 1A with OBD1 to OBD2 adapter etc. So I want to see live data from the body control module and read the resistance of the fuel sending unit (either have bad sender or dash gauge in/op). My Mass storage cartridge is up to 96. I did try to enter a 96 vin code btw, but I can’t get BCM data. I also have a Tech1A with a global OBD2 cartridge (updated to 2003) which reads the pcm data and SRS data but again, when try to get body data I get no information back. With the MSC cartridge I get Display that I need 12/14 pin adapter (which I have -also set correct toggle for E\C) but still no communication. I have current scan tools but limited functionality going back to 97. My tech2 died years ago. Looking for information on anyone with a Tech1 that is able to read 97 OBD2 body data and the configuration you are using. Not sure if the current Techline would even support a 97. Thanks in advance!

I have a couple Tech2's myself, but I've never used a Tech1. The question you are asking is pretty specific and the forum isn't active enough anymore, I don't suspect you'll get your answer.

However, we are very familiar with the Bonneville, so maybe lets just address your issue. Does the fuel gauge do its initial sweep on startup? If so, I doubt it's a cluster issue. You're probably going to end up dropping the tank.

Thanks. I know it is a pretty specific question. I can troubleshoot it. I figure either way I’m going to put a tank and sender in it. As for the sweep, no, it doesn’t BUT I don’t think it is designed to on 97’s. I already ordered two printed FSM’s. I should be able to communicate with the global cartridge but the FSM’s may have the information about scan tool configuration. I specialize in C4 Corvette’s which is why I have the old tech1’s. I use Autel Elite and GScan3. I don’t think (maybe wrong) that Techlne with my J2534’s would be worth it. My folks called me after the “local” mechanics could not figure out why it was a crank no start (fuel gauge showed 3/4 full) . Check the Fuel pressure at the rail, $5 gas and good to go. I will post back here for the heck of it when I get into it. Gonna do all the fluids, minor oil leaks and get it back to where it needs to be.

I'm pretty sure 92-99 should sweep, someone else could clarify that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NICmmJEjNnQ

Not that it helps the OP but the sweep might be a SSE/i cluster specific thing. My 95 SLE does not sweep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd-yRwWZYLY

Also not that it helps, I can verify the gauge sweep occurred on my '93 SSE. Before my daughter totaled it anyway.
