Fuel Gauge Issues
Hello-
On to the next chapter on my daughters 2001 Bonneville.
Her fuel gauge, when the tank is full reads 1/2 full. Then when it gets 1/2 full it shoots up to full. Now its on "E" all the time when there is fuel in the tank.
I'm assuming its the fuel sending in the tank. Am I right? if so, any advise for easily pulling the tank?
Thanks..

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
GM in there infinite wisdom, gives you an access panel in the trunk. There's a write up in Techinfo.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
Not to hijack this thread, but I've replaced the entire pump assembly on my 04 and I still get the erratic levels (sometimes full, empty, half full, quarter full etc) it also looks like the needle in the cluster struggles to move. And it also does not go the entire length of the dial (from empty to full) when starting the car (like the oil pressure, battery, and temp). My guess is the stepper motor is shot, can anyone confirm/reassure me of my suspicion?

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
Given that your SE is a 2004, I'd say yes, stepper motor. The 2004 and 2005s had stepper motor issues.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
If the fuel gauge does not do a full sweep on startup it is most likely the gauge. The SLE instrument cluster is the hardest one to find. Check with Andrew, I believe he offers a repair at a decent price.Ghh0st wrote:Not to hijack this thread, but I've replaced the entire pump assembly on my 04 and I still get the erratic levels (sometimes full, empty, half full, quarter full etc) it also looks like the needle in the cluster struggles to move. Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
Andrew sent me a redone SLE cluster, although I had illumination issues. Works great!
Just gotta swap the mileage chip out of the back.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issues
I got it fixed. I bought a stepper motor kit and replaced them. All is well.95SLE wrote:If the fuel gauge does not do a full sweep on startup it is most likely the gauge.
