Back left window stuck down

Post by ThatThar »

Hi all, my brother borrowed my 2000 SLE last night and neglected to tell me that that the back left window won't go up. What solutions should I be considering aside from replacing the power window motor?

When you press the window switch, do you hear the motor working?

Yes, I can hear a clicking sound coming from the motor in the back window.

the regulator most likely broke. your options are to possibly repair or replace

Its the window regulator/motor, simple to replace. Pm Andrew, I know he'll have some.

Is there a way to get it back up until I can get a new regulator?

Hi, yes. you will have to remove the door panel, carefully peel back the plastic and then you can push the window itself to the closed position- once there, you will have to prop it up with a piece of wood until you get it fixed properly. did this in a 2000 regal and worked nicely for a temp fix

I've already tried pulling up on the window. I actually have the door panel off now because I tried going in there yesterday to see if I could get it to stay up but my idea was unbolting it from whatever the motor uses to raise or lower the window, but I couldn't figure out what to unbolt. It won't go up if I just try pulling on it.

Hi, the thing that lifts the window is the regulator. The window should move freely . You have to push up on the glass itself and not the regulator - don't pull, push up on glass

I pulled back the plastic and tried pushing up. It wouldn't budge. I tried unbolting window from the regulator (the one 10mm bolt), but it's not moving. Something on the other side is getting in the way

Ok, you will have to closely inspect the window from top and bottom- what is holding it in place? is there debris that fell in the window slit- use a flashlight or open the door outside- the window should move freely- this jamming may be the root problem......good luck man!!

It appears that the only thing holding it in place is the rail on the side of the window closest to the front of the car. Is it possible that the railing locked up? It's not supposed to rain here until Thursday which gives me a good amount of time to get the window back up, but I'd like to get it fixed sooner.

I had the same issue sometime when the regulator failed it failed in the down position so try reattaching the door module only so you can use the button, start pushing on the window as you attempt to roll the window up this will basically destroy all attempts to only repair the window as it will bunch up the cable but atleast you will have you window up, also rebolt the window back together before attempting this.

this rail you speak of is probably the guide for window- is there something stuck in there?- try wiggling the window away from this rail. You can also spray some wd40 or another lube to decrease friction.

There are 2 clamps with bolts that hold the regulator to the window. There are also two possibilities as to what is causing your problem.

The first is that the top cable has pulled out of the sled for the window. This causes the window to fall. Generally, you can pull the window up when this happens, unless the bottom cable is so cobbled up that is too tight to allow the window to move. If this is the case, you should be able to see that when you pull back the water shield. Repair or replacement is required if this is the problem. The repair procedure is in techinfo.

The other possibility is that at times, the motor seems to get bound up after years of starting and stopping in the same place. Generally, slamming the door closed while holding the switch in the direction you want the window to go with solve it for a while. With the panel off, I'd suggest that you remove the motor from the regulator, and with everything connected, run the motor in both directions a few times. Install the motor and see if things work now.

I've attached a picture, and if you look closely at the far left side, you can see where the cable has pulled out and is caught in the top guide. I've put an arrow by it. The bottom cable has slack, and you can see the backside of the bolts that clamp the window down.

Thanks for the help guys. I was driving and I tried using the driver controls and miraculously, the window went back up. I'll try to keep it up to prevent it from being stuck down. Is it still something I should concern myself with?

If you still have the door panel off, I'd suggest that you remove the motor and exercise it. It may prevent it from happening again...or until the cable pulls out.
