Drivers Side Transmission Mount
Hi all. I had this posted over at BC but never got an answer :sad5:
My drivers side tranmission mount is bad. Bad as in the rubber has separaed completely. I replaced my other 3 mounts about a month ago but could not figure out how to fix this last mount. I'm having a problem with clearance in getting the mount loose and then getting it past the CV axle and inner tie rod/steering rack.
Any suggestions?

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
I think you will have a tough time getting it out... Not sure but you may have to undo the front trans mount to sub frame and jack the engine & Trans up to get enough room to get it out.. Little bit of a PITA

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
I tried that when I was doing the other 3 mounts but the main problem I was running into was how the mount is mounted to teh transmission case. It seems like it bolts onto a piece of metal and then the metal is bolted on the trans case at an angle The angle is restricting me from being able to reach the bolts to undo the mount. Also, the funny angle and all the stuff in the way is making it harder to get at.
Hmm.... I *might* admit defeat and let a shop replace it for me... dunno

Dang! There must be someone here who's done that mount and can tell you. Hang in there a little bit and I'll see if I can roust anyone out who knows.

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
Its definitely a weird mount. The other 3 were a piece of cake to swap out, especially with my AC compressor gone.
If my camera was working I'd post a picture of how its mounted...

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
I tried looking for instructions in my FSM but the best I can get is an exploded diagram that tells me to unfasten the bolts on the mount for the purpose of pulling the transmission (Pg 7A-18 in the '89 FSM for LeSabre/Electra/PA) but no instructions on how to do it with the trans in the car.
Hmmm....

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
It has been a long time sense I did this but if I remember correctly I had to loose or remove one/two of the other mounts, and move the steering rack to one side that gave me just enough room to "force" it in there. Moving the steering rack was the thing that did it for me, but I took my time a made marks on it so I could get it back in the same spot. Then I had a free alignment check done at sears sense I worked there at the time. That is all I remember having to do, but that was well over 6 years ago.

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
Ahhhh.... moving the rack.... that might do it. The car could probably use an alignment anyway as I doubt its been done in many years
Loosening up the other mounts isn't a big deal either. Ok... this might work....

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
I recently replaced mine... Had the same issue and took it to the shop and watched the mechanic loosen the other mounts and use a transmission jack under the oil pan to get the clearance needed to just squeeze it into place.

Re: Drivers Side Transmission Mount
Get underneath and pull all the bolts of the subframe side of the mount. Then back the bolts off as far as you can on the passenger side rear trans mount. After that i just put a board spaning trans and engine pan to jack up the back end of the engine with. With the engine up like that i believe i was able to get my breaker bar in there to break them loose. It will take a bit of working because the aluminium likes to "grab" the bolts. From there i was able to work it out, i believe i had o slide it out the side towards the wheel before i could pull it p or down though. Ill look at my car later today and double check though.
