Hi. If you can describe the symptoms, we might be able to tell you which way to go. Does it stall? Any specific conditions? Just a check engine light?

From that description (stalling when hot) it sounds like the crankshaft position sensor is likely the problem. It is behind the crank pulley. You will want to check its wiring by opening the loom and looking at the wires. Or to replace the sensor, you have to remove the crank pulley which requires a harmonic balancer puller and three M6x1 bolts that are about 90 mm long and some good sized washers.

Yep. 17 can be related to the crank sensor (will cause stalling), cam sensor (won't cause stalling), or ICM (could cause stalling), or the wiring for any of those.

You can do without if you do something to measure or mark how far the "halls" are from the crankshaft. You have to be very precise so the crank pulley fins don't destroy the sensor. I've used a thread gauge one time and a piece of scrap cardboard another time.

Old 92 has been running fine for a long time. Started getting SES with codes 17 31 and 42. If I shut it off and restart it right away, the SES disappears. Stop for any reason and restart, SES is back. Car runs "okay", but mileage is suffering. Does not stall at all, and holds highway speeds fine. Replaced plugs and plug wires, routine stuff. Any other suggestions? I've followed the thread, but need just a bit of guidance, maybe tie the three codes together. Thanks for any help!
