2005 Shark Fin Roof Antenna

Post by bobgto65 »

I purchased a 2005 Roof Mount Antenna base and antenna to replace the 2004 Rear Glass antenna and I also plan to add Sirius XM. There are 2 connectors coming out from the bottom of the base (inside the headliner). The connectors are not interchangeable. One cable has a blue insulator and is about 4 inches longer and the other is black with a burgundy conncetor. I do not have the cables that connect to the OnStar and Sirius yet Does anyone know which connector goes to the OnStar and which to the Sirius receiver?

Also, if someone has this set-up can they please provide me with a measurement from the back of the antenna base to the front of the rear glass molding?

Thanks
Bob

I don't without looking at diagrams for each, but 2004 OnStar is analog, and 2005 is digital. Two completely different setups. I don't think the antennas are interchangeable. But I'm sure someone with more experience on the electronics can chime in.

I think my OnStar has the digital box (some 2004's came with digital) because when I bought the car, I turned it on and they gave me a 3 month free trial. The analog ones are no longer supported and I believe they will not even work now. There are 2 cables coming out of the antenna. The parts catalog is a little confusing about whether it is for Onstar and Digital radio but it is the only one listed for 2005 Bonnevilles in the parts catalog and it looks the same as the photos that were posted on the forum.

GM offered an upgrade for some pre 2005 model year cars to switch to the digital OnStar components. If I recall correctly it cost $200 but came with a 1 year subscription to OnStar and was available at any GM dealer. I considered doing this on my 2001 Aurora as it was one of the cars covered by this upgrade.

I just bought a 2001 SLE and put the factory radio back in. In testing things I pushed the OnStar button and it talked to me. Based on the replies above is it not suppose to work? Where is the antenna for the OnStar? I don't have the antenna on the back window, I guess when the windows got tinted the shop didn't put it back on.

My 2004 came with dual mode. You can try to press the blue button and see if a rep comes on the phone and she can check your equipment. The 2001 SLE originally came with the antenna on the back windshield, high up on the passenger side. Check in that area to see if a cable is sticking out from the C-pillar inside. I think there is also a GPS antenna located under the package shelf.

This is from the OnStar website:
Analog-Only:
OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog-only equipment were designed to operate only on the analog cellular network and there is no digital upgrade available. Vehicles with this equipment will no longer be able to receive OnStar services beginning January 1, 2008. At this time, service is available only through dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment.

Analog/Digital-Ready:
OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog/digital-ready equipment operated on the analog cellular network, but can be upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment if available for that vehicle (while supplies last). Beginning January 1, 2008, OnStar service will not be available on these vehicles unless the OnStar equipment has been upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment.

Dual-Mode (Analog/Digital):
OnStar-equipped vehicles with dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment operate on both the analog and digital cellular networks and will not require an upgrade in connection with the cellular industry's transition to the digital network.

GM has transitioned to digital OnStar equipment. Some 2004, most 2005, and all 2006 and newer model-year GM vehicles with OnStar are equipped with dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment that is compatible with both the analog and digital cellular networks. Introducing new OnStar equipment is a complex process, since it is dependent upon aligning the timing of the vehicle-ready OnStar equipment with vehicle development plans. Because each vehicle has its own development and manufacturing schedule, not all vehicles will receive the same OnStar equipment at the same time.

Rather than wait for a new model year, GM made the decision to install dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment in vehicles as soon as development and testing permitted.

Eligibility requirements - Many GM vehicles with analog/digital-ready OnStar equipment are eligible for the digital upgrade. Click here to see if your vehicle is eligible. You will be prompted to input your vehicle identification number (VIN) into the OnStar look-up tool, which will determine what type of OnStar equipment is currently installed in the vehicle.
Program cost - Eligible customers who purchase a prepaid, non-refundable, non-transferable 1-year OnStar Safe & Sound subscription for $199 (plus applicable subscription tax) will receive an equipment upgrade including parts and labor for only $15.* A Directions & Connections subscription is available as well.

There are pre-programmed messages built into it. It just won't work as a phone, etc.

I was able to find a color coding table and the antenna base that I bought from GM has 2 cables coming out. They use special color coded FAKRA connectors. The blue one is used for GSM cell phones and the violet one is used for GPS. So It does not look like my roof antenna is set up for Sirius XM. The Sirius XM receiver I bought (SC-C1) has a magnetic mount roof antenna but I think it is small enough to fit inside the base so I plan to take the base apart as soon as I can find a torx screwdriver that is the right size to remove the housing screws. GM also made one antenna for the 2005 Bonneville with 3 cables coming out but it is not listed in the parts catalog. I don't really need the GPS antenna as the one for OnStar on my car is located on the package shelf.
