rear brake groan when in reverse

I have a loud groan from the rear brakes when in reverse. Anyone got any suggestions to fix this. The car is a 2001 Bonnie SLE with 60k miles. I think the rears are original.

I had the same thing happen to me. I finally got fed up with it, cause it was loud and echoed throughout my whole car. So I just decided to replace all my rotors, pads, and hardware. After I had them switched out, it hasn't done it since. I did notice though that on the rear, the pads were opposite from the other side. (One pad has the little piece sticking out from it and the other doesn't. Those were opposite from each side.) I can't remember if I put the new ones back on the same way of if I put them both the same.

Those don't matter. They're just the "squealers" that contact the rotor to let you know when your pads are bad.

Gonna have to pull the rear wheels off and inspect the brakes. Probably going to need at least pads and it's always a good idea to replace your slide pins when you're in there.

I think it more of a Groan then a squeek he is refering too. I think it has something to do with the way the pads are contacting the rotors when reversing.. maybe from wear (front of pad thinner then rear or something) nothing to worry about, you can have rotors turned lightly and inspect the pads and scuff them to see if the groan goes away.. its annoying but nothing broken. but turn rotors and new pads would most likely resolve the issue if scuffing the pads doesn't, assuming that i understand what you are hearing (99% sure i do)

Can't turn the rear rotors, they're solid. Hell, I'm against turning any rotor anymore, with the exception of one that's rarely driven/hard to find new, and within spec.

I have turned solid rotors.. basically a light scuff/shave of the surface to take out groves and deglaze them. they are still within safty specs.

why shave rotors when you can get first line pair for 60 bucks?

this groan you hear, does it happen only under light brake pressure or light and hard braking pressure on peddle?

I hear mine first thing in the morning and thats it.. And it is a nasty groan.. Drive a block and it doesn't do it.. Before I did the brakes it was the left side, after I did the brakes its the right side.. Soon I will go through the brakes again and I will get Bendix Titanium Metallic Pads( Have had really good luck with them on the older Bonneville )... For the rotors I am going to spend the $$ and get the Heavy Duty version.. I am thinking about replacing the rear calipers and all of the brake hoses just for measure..

The 95 Bonneville has had its front rotors( Bendix HD Rotors and Bendix Titanium Metallic II Pads) for the last 70,000 miles and they still have meat on them.. And the warp is very minimal, such that I want to turn those rotors and keep them..

Also to note it, you have to make sure the slots on the rear caliper line up with the pins on the pads..
