1993 bonneville running hot and shutting down

Need some help guys. My stepsons bonneville keeps running close to the red on temp guagu and shutting down at stop signs/stop lights. He notices that when he comes to the light and steps on the breaks the oil drops to zero and the car shuts off, he can keep going buy keeping is foot in the throttle. Recently we had the ICM changed and I verified coolant is in there along with plenty off oil. I have changed the oil pressure sensor about 10 months ago, I am getting a code 41 though.


About to scrap it if I cant figure this one out.

First, the basics. The cooling system needs to be checked for leaks, or if it's "using" coolant. Does it die when it's still cold, or only when hot? If the system has a leak and cannot maintain pressure it will run hot. Next, would be the thermostat. It might be opening late, and they only cost $10.

Code 41 means there is a problem with the cam sensor, it's wiring, or the magnet on the cam inside the timing cover has fallen off. This will cause issues with dying, not staying running, etc. I'd start by checking that the wire and connectors between the sensor and the ICM. Use a DMM open/short circuit tester to make it easy. If the wiring and connector pins are all good, you will have to remove the sensor, look in the hole and make sure the magnet is still on the gear inside. You might have to turn the engine by hand (wrench on the balancer bolt) to get the magnet to line up with the hole. If the magnet is gone, easiest way to replace it is to remove the timing cover and balancer and water pump. There is a method to fix it without taking the cover off, but it's a good idea to do some PM and change the timing chain and damper. Be aware, removing the timing cover will open the engine coolant passages and oil pan to contamination, and the oil will have to be changed. Do not use a wire wheel or abrasive to clean the timing cover gasket surface. Use a razor.

Don't give up on the Bonnie just yet!

sounds like a camshaft issue to me, my old firebird did that exact same thinh when I accidently put the wrong camshaft in it, so like mattstrike said check the sensor wires, and magnet for the camshaft. I think its getting the wrong signal, and adjusting the timing way off.

Thank you I will try to check the coolant system for leaks because it looks like it using. I have the cam sensor magnet just need to break down and change it.
