How do you remove the front power window regulator tape?

Post by jimbone_sdca »

You all helped me immensely back in July and I want to say thanks!

New problem: I have been trying unsuccessfully to remove the stripped out regulator tape from the driver side regulator. I have wasted about a week and a half so far. Ihave removed the lock linkage and ythe seatbelt and the splash guard and the window. The 1 thing I want to remove is the lifter tape and regulator guide but I can't seem to figure it out. I got the gm pontiac shop manual and their instructions need improvement so do their drawings for it which appear backward and are incomplete.

I found the first 4 tabs that anchor the lift tape but i can't seem to figure out how it is so securely anchored to those tabs It has me dumbfounded. I took the car to a mechanic for an estimate and they told me I'd have to use their parts and replace the motor too. the motor is fine and I just can't see paying 300 dollars for a strip of plastic with holes in it installed for that price HELP!

BTW I have 1991 Pontiac Bonneville LE w/power windows.

The tape wraps around the motor, and snaps in (4?) of the holes in the tape on the end, it makes a loop of tape when the window is closed. Also, there is a nylon snap on the other end of the tape (the window regulator guide is what that thing is called) that connects to the channel on the bottom of the window, that can't be removed from the tape until the tape is off the track. Pop the tape off the back of the motor and pop the snap off the window channel. Roll the window motor down until the tape is run all the way through, then pull it out the other side of the channel.

You have to drill out the rivets and remove the motor and track to get the tape off the motor. Use nylon lock nuts and a standard bolt to re-install.

I could probably take some pictures of the one I have sitting in the scrap pile, but you'd have to wait until the weekend.
