If its cold outside, when I change it to cold it gets cold, but only as cold as outside temp...

Did you check to see if the actuator is moving through the entire range?02kybonnie wrote:I think the actuators are fine because it will switch from outside temp to hot. What/where is the orifice tube?

The_Dude wrote:If I read the original post correctly, it seems to me that he is getting flow out of the vents, just not cold air, and if that is the case his actuators are working fine.
If so, I had the same problem after I replaced a failed compressor: fully charged system, line cold from the accumulator to the firewall, but ambient air out of vents. Ambient air in south Louisiana is 95, so, yeah, that sucked. Turned out to be a dirty orifice tube. Once that was replaced and the system was recharged I had cold air.
Not saying this is the culprit in this case, but it took two experienced mechanics a week to figure this out on my car.
Good luck!
Ok, where is this orifice tube? I checked my actuators and moved the blend door by hand and it's fully functional... I'm thinking evaporator or possibly plugged line or something is dirty.

It's located here.
You'll have to have the system evacuated. I would suggest that while there, have them do a check of the system to find the problem, instead of just replacing parts.

Re: Ac issue, already searched...
That's the weirdest setup I've ever seen on a vehicle... Ive always wondered why the high and low side are on the same line. Would a bad evaporator give me the same symptoms?? Should the whole line be cold where the orifice tube is?? How do I clean the tube?
Re: Ac issue, already searched...
when i did mine i replaced AC compressor, Orifice tube/Expansion valve (same thing), Evaporator and cleaned the system with parts cleaner, pipe cleaners and compressed air. the orifice tube also is a screen, mine was plugged from the compressor letting lose. if your passanger side is cold then i would say the orifice tube and the accumulator is good. the AC guy would have noticed a low pressure reading on the high side if the orifice tube was plugged.... i had to put 2.5lbs in mine to get both sides cold, but that is just what mine took... my AC with 2.5lbs and a veriable orifice tube blows out at 25*
verry nice.

Re: Ac issue, already searched...
My passenger side isn't cold... None of it is... Has anyone done a write up of how to clean the ax system??? What exactly does the expansion valve do??? I want to say I have clogged lines... My car has 300,000 miles... Do I just take apart the orifice tube and spray cleaner up in it and then take a compressor and blow air through it??? Should both side of the line be cold at the orifice tube or just the high pressure side??? If someone could gimme a step by step on how to clean ill be ever so greatful. I am mechanically enclined so you wouldn't have to write it up for a 2 year old lol. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Ac issue, already searched...
My situation is similar. Heat and A/C work fine, blower could be better but is okay. What I get is simply colder air on the driver's side. Right now it's cold out, and during my commute to work, i never get any heat on my side, but the passenger side gets moderate heat. With A/C, driver is much cooler. Anyway, I actually covered the dash vents with tape to block the cold air. It helps, but the passenger side vents don't do a great job. Looking at the floor vents, I can get nice and warm from the right, but very cold on the left. Where is the split? Where can i find the point at which the two feeds separate? It's like i'm getting 30 degree outside air on my side and heated air elsewhere. Not afraid to dig in. This is, by the way, a 92 SE.
Thanks, like to resolve this soon, only gonna get colder.

Re: Ac issue, already searched...
My 1997 Park Avenue had the same problem, I sent the car back to the GM dealer to have the accuators reprogrammed, they did so and told me my control in the dash was bad. I replaced the dash control, and it still was blowing hot air from the drivers vents and almost room temperature from the passenger vents. When tested all accuators were functioning. I replaced the cabin air filter and put an entire brand new Delphi OE A/C compressor and accumulator, Still no help. I finally gave up and started replacing the accuators one by one the first one under the glove box I replaced, and then had the idea to disconnect the battery. If you leave the battery disconnected for a couple minutes all the accuators should reset and it should be functioning. The problem my Park Ave was having happened to be some of the accuators stuck in the closed position when the system was on. Try the battery hopefully it works, Good Luck
