What mods next?

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

What mods next?

Post by Kevnitty203 »

I have a 97 ssei in tip top shape. Actually I'd
Say amazing condition.
It has 90k on it.

So far it has magnaflow exhaust. K&n drop in
Filter. Intense chip. Performance wires and fresh plugs.
Dex cool is gone. But I'm not sure what to do next.
Cold air intake? Header? Pulley?

There is only one true intake designed for our cars, the Intense FWI.

There are a number of brands of headers on the market, it seems like the cheap e-bay headers are a better deal than the more expensive SLP or Pacesetters, but need some more work on your end.

What are your goals? What do you use the car for, what do you expect out of it?

We can tell you how to get into the 13's, or how to keep your car running forever. It all depends on what you want...

I drive about 10 miles a day. And 50 miles on weekends roughly. It is my daily
Id like to see 13's while still being a reliable daily. I don't drive fast or hard often.
But I would like more power gain for when I do. Id like to hang with my roomates cars.
right now they are faster than me.

My mods that ran 13.89 with the L67engine and poor quality (OEM) tires -

CAI
180 Thermostat
PCM Tune
1.95 Rockers
2 steps colder spark plugs (Autolite)
3.4 modular pulley

The first level cam Intense sells could be substituted for the above rockers if you are willing to go through the hassle of doing one. I would also say that with 90k miles, once you start modding and try to get into the 13's, be prepared for any costs that may come your way such as transmission or engine repairs. After running the above combo for 30k miles, I spun a bearing - no idea why, but the bearing was thin as H*LL, so something amiss for a while. I don't think headers are necessary unless you go less than a 3.5 pulley right away and/or you do a cam. I just put TOGs headers on my L32 install. They appear to be good quality pieces (coated inside and out) and at idle the car is quiet (no leaks at all). Still working out some minor bugs on my engine swap, so can't provide full review of these headers quite yet.

Good Luck

Do you think the lifters where to blame
For the spun bering. Or the extra boost?
I'm coming from dsm's. Where we would boost
The life out of our cars.

Personally I would cam instead of putting 1.9s on.

Rockers/Lifters would not be the sole culprit to cause a spun bearing. Could excessive boost have caused? Possibly, but that's like 400 lb man complaining to his tailor that his pants don't make him look slim enough. More likely, the rod & bearings as installed from the factory were not quite up to the task. Guessing either poor bearing quality, poor rod-bolt quality, or poor rod quality and/or poor assembly techniques (tolerances, etc.). Remember that car corporations such as GM are in the business of making a profit, not to build custom race cars. Even bone stock cars don't have a warranty after 5 years (there is a reason for that). That's why any time you want to start playing with your cars on the weekend, be prepared to fix them during the week :sadeyz:

Not poor quality just not quality that can handle the extra power got out of it. Im sure they arent Clevite bearing or the such. These are "performance" engines from the factory, just not race engines.
