Axle Shaft Stuck In Hub

Post by 96LSS »

My hubs are shot so I picked up a pair of Moog units and attempted to get the old ones off. All of the hardware came off without a problem and the hub fell out of the knuckle but I can't get the axle shaft out of the hub, I've tried everything - PBblaster, slide hammer, 3-jaw puller, heating the hub with my oxy-acetylene torch, more PBblaster, impacting the end of the axle with a punch in my air chisel and beating the heck out of the axle shaft with a 4 lb hammer (threads protected). Is there some special trick that I haven't run across?

Thanks,
Jim

I had the same problem. It was extremely rusted in. I got a big heavy hammer and beat the crap out of it. The threads of the hub/axle were literally rusted together. Also it seemed like there wasn't enough room to get it out or something as. (I was removing the strut at the same time so just took the whole strut out then got the axle out of the tranny)

When in doubt, get a bigger hammer. I've had to use a sledgehammer on them before...

Bigger hammer. Also, try bolting the hub back in loosely so there's less swinging to absorb the force from the hammer. Spray the backside of the hub too.

I borrowed a 10-lb sledge from my neighbor when doing my hubs the first time. The axles came right out after just looking at the sledge.

Thanks - one of the things I did was to put a few washers between the hub and the knuckle and snugged the hub bolts down to hold the hub firm and to give the axle some room if it actually came loose. I've got an 8 lb sledge out in the shed that I'll try tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to pull out the steering knuckle, axle, and hub and bring it to a shop with a press or air hammer.

A bigger hammer did the trick. 4th blow with the 8 lb sledge and it came loose. The other side came apart with just a tap. Just came back from a road test - it's all good. Thanks for the comments!
