In my quest to enhance the cold air intake and ram air feature to my other Pontiac I have decided to use 1/4" wood under my hood. I think Bill knows what I'm up to. :wink:

The template you see is complete.
It will be attached to the underside of the hood. The hood vents will be dual purpose, heat extractors and CAI for the ram air box.

I'm toying with the actual material of fabrication. Metal is too conductive. Plastic has to be the correct type to avoid melting. Wood of course is not too moisture resistant but I don't drive in the wet but it is a little heavy. Not too bad if I choose it thin enough. 1/4" oak is actually 3/16" thick. Another option is WRP as opposed to heavy FRP. It doesn't need a lot of strength. There is enough underhood stiffening metal to use self tapping screws to hold it on.

It will be unique and functional to be sure.

Another option is WRP as opposed to heavy FRP.
Wood Reinforced Plastic or Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic. I have to keep it light and no thicker than the cardboard template. That's why I was leaning towards just plain 3/16" thick oak painted with black epoxy sealer.

Watch for fumes when it gets hot. Think mid-summer idling at a track day hot.

Or how about a wooden inside with a metal outside? Place an air gap between the two, and lessen the risk of heat-soak and setting the wood on fire.

It really doesn't get that hot. With a 160 stat, wrapped headers and the hood vents, the engine bay never gets hotter than 140F, but your point is taken. Thanks.

This will be an easily reversible experiment so not too much to lose by trying it in plain wood. I'm not even sure it will take the curvature of the hood yet and the method of attachment still needs to be detailed.

If only I could source the right plastic but the building supply stores here are very limited. :angry7:

Taking him out today to burn a little rubber on some fresh pavement! :twisted:

If it doesn't get that hot under hood, wouldn't sheet aluminum work? The air really wouldn't have time to heat soak from the metal, you could even insulate the underside with some spray-on insulation (something like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DEI-050220). That would also keep the weight down.
