91 bonneville Power window issue.

Post by Pepcfreak »

ello again,

Im having an issue with my power windows. The motor works but only for short intervals. If i press the button to make my window go down it goes down about 1 inch. Then i let it sit for about 5 mins and it will go down another 1 inch. Same for going up except going up is alot short distance.

Any idea?

Im also looking for the ground bus posted here which shows these pics

The ground bus is not there for the 87-91. You most likely have a bad motor.

The ground bus was there, in fact 4 were there, found them wrapped in electrical tape, they all looked great. Checked all the wires also look great time to just replace motor!

Before you change window lift motors, check the switch. If it is the driver's side front door window, you only have one switch to check, but the other three lift motors have two switches (one on the driver's door plus a parallel wired switch in the door the window is in.) The contacts can get dirty and cause the intermittent operation too. Makes it easy to cross check a window that gets stuck by using the other switch to try operating it.

If you don't find the problem in the switch, then it's time for a new lift motor. (Join the club, every GM vehicle I've ever owned with power windows has had a lift motor die in a manner you described...though they also had several switches replaced too for similar failures.)
