Performance Upgrades!

Post by Mek 97SSE »

The ol' SSE is going to be getting an ignition tune up. And, well, if I'm going to replace something, might as well go with more performance oriented parts. So I was just curious what brands you guys like for coils, plug wires, and spark plugs on the 3800? This car isn't supercharged, and is completely stock. It won't remain that way for too very long, though :)

Coils, if there's nothing wrong, keep them. They're fine.

Wires: Napa Beldin Premium (blue) wires. A majority of the top 25 3800's have them, they have a lifetime warranty and are exchangeable at any Napa.

Plugs: Stock replacement for your car are fine, as long as you don't add a turbo or supercharger.

I'd recommend an Intense FWI for one of your first mods. I love mine. http://intense-racing.com/Merchant2/mer ... _Induction

The FWI is on my list of things to do to the car for sure. Probably order one after i get it paid off in the next month or two. I'll definitely look into those plug wires. As for the coils, they probably are just fine. I can never leave anything alone, though.

There are MSD coils, but they're not worth the money. Stock coils are just fine for anything but a wild motor. If you think the coils are crapping out, you can test them with the article in Techinfo. http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... =48&t=1683

Coils off a supercharged 96+ are a little better than NA coils. MSD coils are a bit better than that.

Do what 00beast said; I would get the plug wires for a series 1 bonnie or stock ones & wouldn't waste my time with msd coils since factory ignition is as good as any performance brand if not superior.

Make that 97+. The hotter L67 coil didn't come out until 97.

But, the gain you'll get from it is insignificant, along the lines of .5 HP and .1 mpg at best. If you find a set cheap at a JY, snag them, otherwise leave them.

Just kind of crappy weather out right now otherwise I'd be checking the rest of the things on my list here. My only problem is going to be the intake manifold gaskets if they weren't changed. More than likely it'll have to go to a shop since the apartment complex doesn't take too fondly to any kind of automotive work involving fluids. Honestly the car runs smoother than my Silverado so I probably don't need to change any of the ignition pieces. I was just curious to see what you all liked to run as far as those parts were concerned. After hearing what you all have had to say I'll stick with the stock pieces.

Soon here I'll order that Intense FWI, and probably look into a muffler that has some good sound to it. Eventually I'll have the time and room to just go crazy with the car. :)

Its better to replace plugs and wires now, because when you have issues, you can rule them out.
