P-R-N-D-1-2 Illumination on 95

Post by ChilinMichael »

Ok,

As most already know, 95 Bonneville's got entirely inadequate lighting of the gear lights, the dot is strong and great to indicate where you are, but the lights showing what is what is entire crap. Is there a simple fix or am I going to fabricate something here?

Ther's lighting to show gear selector position in addition to the dots? I was noticing how crappy it was the other day.

Maybe mine are burnt out and I don't even realize it

Yes, along with the dots. The reason it's so crappy is design. You know what's lighting up the letters? The same bulb that lights your ashtray. There's a 1/8 inch gap and then a clear piece of plastic leads into bringing that light into the letters. Great design.

Ideas?

Never tried it myself, but what if you cut off the top of the white plastic bulb cover?

IIRC (and I'm not real certain on this) the '93 had a bulb that looked like a standard 194 bulb. However, the proper replacement was a different number, and a brighter bulb.

If something got any brighter I would think the *dang* thing would melt...touching it after 2 minutes that plastic cover is so hot it's insane...I'm really surprised it doesn't go on fire....

**Edit: I'm almost thinking LED's are the way to go in this application...**

Brighter does not always equate with hotter.

I really hope you are right in this case....do you happen to have the correct bulb number then?

No, sorry....I do not. The '93 hasn't been around for about 4 years now. I can't even say for sure that it was a different number. I'm working from a foggy memory of when I had to repair the wiring to the bulb for the dots. I don't know whether or not that bulb would be listed in the owner's manual.

I just replaced mine the other day and well wasn't that bad... Remove the shifter and get the screws outta the ashtray pull the shift cover off then put it back into park... You will see the 194 bulb for the ashtry and to light up the plastic outside... Under that a bit lower there is another bulb which has a 7mm screw remove (Don't drop it!) The bulb I pulled is a (GE558) looks just like a 194 except this one is projected so light up... I put a 194 pin 4 Led in its place which is Yellow but I put a yellow 194 where the ashtray light is so it blends well with the yellow indicator... Good Luck Hope This Helps!

It was way back when, but I recall reading about how the bulb-to-light rerouting piece relationship could be adjusted for more light output at the gear indicators.

Wow this is a bit back, but I'll update it. I've replaced the bulb with a very strong red LED, also cut the opening a little wider that aims towards the clear plastic bringing the light into the gear indicators. It's much brighter now.
